121"At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."
The statement raise a variety of issues about morality, self-preservation and economics. On balance, however, I fundamentaly disagree with the notion that human beings need not make extraordinary efforts to save endangered species.
Admittedly, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes, especially in the past when human beings did not exist. According to Darwinian theroy, so-called “natural selection” in which stronger species survive while weaker ones do not, some species were eliminated by natural force not human behavior. In ancient time, various species like the dinosaurs, the doodoo bird and mammoth all became extinct because of various natural reasons like sudden climate change or global natural disasters. From this angle, this statement seems logical.
However, natural processes which eliminate some species through natural selection did not break the balance of the ecosystem. Since human beings have prosered and taken over control of this planet, more and more extinction or endangerment of species can be attributed to human processes, either directly or indirectly. Unscrupulous hunting of the whales and tigers for unlawful monetary gain has pushed these animals to the verge of extinction. At the same time, our industrial pollution has deeply disturbed the ecosystem and broken the delicate balance on which thousands of species rely on to sustain themselves. The animal kingdom is an intricate matrix of interdependent relationships in which each species depends on many others for its survival. Severing certain relationship can set into motion a series of extinctions that ultimately might endanger our own survival as a species.
Since human beings are the most superior species on earth, they have the responsibility to take good care of the planet. We live on the earth and all we have are taken from it. Isn’t it ironical that we cut down trees to make everything from furniture to paper and from chopsticks to barbeque carbon and our reciprocation is massive deforestation and expansion of deserts as a result? Isn’t it shameful that we take water from the earth for drinking, washing, numerous other purposes and what we return to the water are polluted, poisonous living and industrial waste? Isn’t it embarrassing that from the earth we extract oil and mine coal, which are the basic building blocks of our modern civilization and we are now saying that we have no responsibility of doing something to make the earth a more livable place not only for us alone, but also for other children of our mother planet? We are morally obligated to help preventing extinction and it is a very high affirmative duty on humans to protect endangered species.
Although it will take us a hard work at first to save these endangered species, they soon help us saving money and creating jobs. Every year inestimable loss are caused due to the deterioration of the environment and the disruption of the food chain and eco-balance. Also as a result, people like fisherman and hunters are losing their jobs. In the contrary, Jobs like planting trees can be created by starting a campaign to restore the natural habitant those endangered species live in. And, once we have successfully protected these animals, the benefit of the variety species and the improved robustness of the ecosystem as a result will bring enormous opportunities and save us billions of economic loss.
In conclusion, protecting endangered species is beneficial to the species themselves, the environment and human beings. We should strive to save these animals and maintain the harmony between different species at all costs. |
