Television and Internet, which play an increasingly important role in our society, provide entertainment, relaxation and piles of information to us. I concede that they can offer us with more detailed information about some places, which we want to know, than ever before. But there are still some functions of traveling that can not be substituted by them.
Admittedly, with the modern techniques developing, we can use lots of advanced tools to get to know some places of interest without actually accessing them. The programs on TV or the materials on the webpage give us vivid pictures of certain locations, from these pictures we can learn the climate and terrain of these places, how the people lives there and so on. Usually there are lots of particular comments, which made by specific person and introduce to us the history, culture background and customs of these places, come along with the pictures. We can gain a first impression of the places through these pictures presented to us, and by reviewing the remarks we know more detailed information and become to know about them. Including in these pictures and comments, we may imagine ourselves are really in these places and feel like we are traveling indeed. Therefore, these modern tools offer us so many opportunities that they can give us the feeling of traveling to some extent.
However, traveling, which is the traditional way people used to get familiar with certain locations, still has its meanings nowadays and surely will not be superseded by these modern tools. Attributing to the fast development of technology, the landscaping of the locations are provided to us with photographs, the customs and values of particular religion groups are described to us by words. But can these pictures and comment take the place of traveling. Certainly not, the feelings of a person standing on the Everest and a person see the picture of Everest are not the same, the former may feel passionate and really shocked by the tremendous beauty of nature, hence this experience will remembered by him through all his life. To the contrary, there may just a thought flow through the latter's mind and he may forget this scene seen from picture before long. So traveling can offer us some unique experiences that other tools can not provide.
Further more, the trend of tourism is growing instead of declining. Television and Internet inspire people's interests to traveling rather than force them staying in home. We are easily stimulated by the beautiful landscapes on TV or Internet, and then are very eager to travel to these locations by ourselves. Besides, as our working pressures are increasing, we are willingly to release ourselves, relieve us from the pressures when there is a break from work. And traveling is a best option at this circumstance. By traveling to another place, meeting different people and accessing to mysterious cultures, we may feel entirely emancipate from work and forget all the unhappy things. Then we can feel totally relaxed. Then we are very likely choosing traveling as our creation to enrich our spare time. As mentioned above, traveling will serve a role in our everyday lives and its trend is increasing recently.
In sum, television and Internet are the facilities represent the modernization of our society, and traveling, as a method to know some places or a hobby, has a long history in human existence. They both have their benefits to us and our society. Neither one of them will become obsolete.
