A leader should feature some essential qualities which furnish them the ability to be distinguished and effective. Among them, I would agree with the speaker that the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles is a crucial quality that many excellent leaders possess; however, this notion cannot be further extended to embrace the conclusion that consistency is always preferred to shifts in popular opinion.

First, it is true that without certain faith and the determination to some objectives, a leader would less likely to be motivated. Problems which can be solved easily will not make a difference between outstanding and mediocre people. So a challenging problem which requires volition and persistence is what makes leaders who they are. Thereby only committing to particular principles can one make substantial progress and achievements. Deng Xiaoping, the Leader of Chinese government after Mao, determined to implement the Economic Reform in 1978. At that time, in and out of the country, the proposition gained quite a few disputes. Some argued that it was a compromise to the Marxism, flying in the face of what the nation have been committing to for decades. However, such controversy later proved to be weak when the Reform helped lift millions of people out of poverty and generated considerable values to support industrialization and modernization in the following decades. Indeed, as Einstein said, "Problems cannot be solved using the same kind of thinking when we created them". And leaders, with a better understanding and broader view of the society, would be more likely to come up with certain innovation, solutions that would be considered unique or even eerie. But if leaders cannot hold their faith and try to guide the mass population using his or her perspective, the nation would be boggled down in a confusion of direction.

However, the committing to certain principles is not sufficient to success as a leader. Under some certain circumstances, it would even be harmful. For an example, one reason that obliged people to carry out the Economic Reform mentioned above is a series of disasters, including the Great Leap Forward and proposed by Mao Zedong. With the conviction that China could transform to an industrialized and modern country in few years, Mao encouraged large-scale but feckless production, which wasted huge workforce and natural resources. Public opinions were then flooded by the propaganda from a short sighted government. And this strategy was later recognized as a major economic disaster, ending with a wide spread famine and starvation with severely undermined social system. After all, popular opinions could be a reflection of people’s inclination, perception and impression of politic actions, and leaders need such feedback to adjust and regulate policies.

As to the realm of business, the importance of public opinions is almost self-evident, since most business aims at satisfying the needs of certain groups of people, and this calls for a careful study of the groups’ preference and attitude. For an example, when the Internet first become popular 10 years ago, people simply thought it to be a revolutionary version of newspaper because of the limited bandwidth. So websites like Yahoo was established to meet such needs. Facing with constantly increasing amount of information, people needed a solution to seek and find information effectively. Thus Google was born. Later, with the broadened bandwidth and a more lively generation, people were enabled to utilize the Internet to show their individuality, thus Youtube was created to furnish people such a platform. Being able to grip the trend of mass population is crucial to any businessmen. Thereby far from being stubborn, business leader would find it especially useful to follow the public opinions.

In sum, a leader should be capable to hold on his or her own principles since more often than not, they have a clearer and deeper view than ordinary people, and they are responsible to guide people through perplexities. However, such quality, if translated in another sense, could manifest itself as stubborn when leaders are arbitrary and dictatorial. Leaders should take public opinions into account, and cannot use their persistence as an excuse to reject proper regulation.

Issue160 by Andier. Still getting nothing..

Among them, I would agree with the speaker that the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles is a crucial quality that many excellent leaders possess; however, this notion cannot be further extended to embrace the conclusion that consistency is always preferred to shifts in popular opinion.
