TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the arguer recommends to limit the inventory of imported cheese and concentrate mainly on domestic cheeses as the best way to increase profits. To support his/her argument, s/he cites the following two facts: (1) the five best-selling cheeses at their newest stores are domestic cheeses from Wisconsin. (2) A recent survey of a magazine demonstrates its subscribers prefer domestic cheeses increasingly. However, this argument is fraught with critical flaws after close scrutiny.
First of all, the selling results of their newest store lend no credible support to this argument. For a chain of cheeses stores, one newest store can not stand for the selling results through out the country which may differ geographically. It is highly possible that the newest store is built in the state of Wisconsin or the ones nearby and people are used to the taste of the cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin long before. While it is not the same with people in others states in America. Hypothetically, even the majority of its stores' best selling cheeses are the cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin, the suggestion of stop stocking imported cheese is unwise as well. There is such a chance that people may like only the cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. As to other domestic cheeses, they may prefer the imported ones. Therefore, the mere selling result of the newest store can speak little for the feasibility of the recommendation.
Second of all, the recent survey by a magazine can hardly be strong enough to sustain the arguer's points since there are no information provided about the subscribers of the magazine. It is quite possible that the subscribers are consisted of certain kind of people such as housewives, or retired citizens. Nevertheless, cheese is one of the major foods that nearly everyone eats. Therefore, the survey is fragile as a support for the argument.
Finally, it is far too hasty to make the decision of discontinuing stocking many of their imported cheese as the best way to improve profits without taking into account of other factors. On the one hand, even people in the country prefer domestic cheeses to imported ones, it still maybe a temporary trend. Perhaps, after a short period, people would choose imported cheeses over the domestic ones. But limiting the inventory of the imported cheeses can possibly harm the relationship between the chain stores and the suppliers who refuses to provide imported cheeses at a reasonable price. Thus, the interests of the chain stores can be seriously damaged. On the other hand, it is beneficial for the reputation of a chain-store of cheese to have all varieties of products. To cut the diversity of the store arbitrarily may exert negative influence on its reputation, sequentially damage its interests. In sum, before ruling out other possible suggestion and proving the feasibility of the suggestion, the arguer can not convince me discontinuing stocking the imported cheeses is the best way to increase profits.
In conclusion, the argument is not persuasive at all as it stands. To make it more convincing, the arguer needs to offer more evidence and supports to espouse that people through out the country prefer domestic cheeses besides the cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin to the imported ones. What’s more, the arguer should collect more data and information to explain why stopping the stock of imported cheeses will triumph other possible plans.
