26The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.

"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system."

In this argument, the arguer cites the fact that the school band from Steel City high has won three regional band competitions since Mr Charles Schade become the music director at Steel City high School. In addition, the arguer points out that over Mr Charles Schake's term of office, the quality of the music  rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly. On that basis, the arguer claims that Mr Charles Scade will be competent to direct the general music education programs for entire Saluda school system. close scrutiny reveals that the argument involves a series of logical flows.

In the first place, the fact that since Mr Charles Schade served as music director at Steel City high School, the school band from Steel City high has won three regional band competition tells little about the performance of Mr Charles Scade. The arguer fails to inform what's the performance of the school band before. It is possible that the school band performs the same even better before. In that case, the performance of Mr Charles Schade seems not very good. Even if the performance of the school band did improve, it is not necessarily because the service of Mr Charles Schade. It is equally possible that other factors other than Mr Charles Schade improved the performance of the school band. Because the arguer's failure to rule out those alternative explanations, we cannot take seriously his or her conclusion.

In the second place, mere the fact that the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Stel City High has improved markedly can not indicate that Mr Charles Schades do well as director. There are many factors that can influence the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments, especially economical factors. It is likely that Steel City High School achieve a handsome donation, or government plan a fund in budge for it, and the school improved its hardware, as a result, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments improved markedly. Unless the arguer excludes that possibilities, he or she can not convince me.

Assuming in his term of office, Mr Charles Schade did make great contribution, it can not prove that he will be competent to direct the general music education program for entire Saluda School System. Obviously, the nature of the job to direct the general music education programs is different from the job of the music director. The former is much more complex and require higher ability. Unfortunately, the arguer fails to provide credible evidence which indicates that Mr Charles Schade has the very abilities.

In conclusion, arguer commits a series of logical problems in the argument, which make it not convincing. In order to strengthen it the arguer must provide reliable evidence which indicates that Mr Charles Schade performed well as director. In addition, the arguer must prove that Mr Charles Schade will be also competent to direct entire Saluda school system.
