218"In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people."

提纲：
1通俗艺术面向大众因该易于理解。
2高雅艺术面向文化水平较高的人不必追求易于理解。
3不同的人有不同的偏好，作品有没有价值也不能仅仅用是否容易理解来衡量。

In this statement, the author asserts that art must be widely understood to have merit. In my opinion, there are kinds art for different audience, so it is unnecessary and impossible for all works of art to be understandable to majority of the people.

Admittedly, popular art is likely to have wide hits, such as country music, Hollywood film and so on. Popular art is understandable to most persons, so they owns a large quantity of audience. Tom Cruis, the superstar owns unnumbered fans, because his film is understandable, even if to the people in non-English countries. Similarly, Michael Jackson's attractive songs move so many persons. Besides, popular art is likely to engender wide influence, because their contents are near to everyday life. For example, the comedy of Chaplin reflected the characters in everyday life, express the emotion of ordinary people, which made it popular across America. Titanic, the greatest film in history, expresses pure romance though a tragedy, which makes everyone con not help shedding tears. Popular art moves audiences and give them opportunity to enjoy beauty, unquestionably, it is an important kind of art.

Although popular art is a important kind of art, it is not the only one. Except popular art, decorous art is also a important kind of art which upgrades human beings' spirit. Tchaikovsky's ballet "swan Lake"  tells a beautiful romance, which has moved unnumbered people. Beethoven's great symphony give us the endless strength to overcome difficulties. Different from popular art, decorous art does not serve ordinary people, but serve the people with high taste or interest in art. The work of decorous art involves abundant subtext, which is difficult to understand without high aesthetic ability. For example, the stream of consciousness is a important branch of modern novel. The works of stream of consciousness have not continuous plot as traditional novels did, it takes imagine to understand the means of that kind of story. Similarly, Gogh Vincent Willem Van is a talented artist, who composed many excellent paintings. His sunflower expresses his crazy enthusiasm to life, but it takes trained aesthetic to enjoy it. To some  degree, decorous art is the gain formation of human emotion and intelligence.

There are many kinds of people, with different taste, different interest and different preference. The mission of art is just satisfy the need of different individuals, which means that there mush be art with different traits. Popular art serve most people, of course, it must be understandable. While decorous serve the people with high taste or interest in art, so it is unnecessary for it to be understandable to most people. The value of art lies in it move the audiences emotionally and spiritually, rather than be understood widely. What’s the point if audience understand the work completely but fell not moved.

To sum up, it is unreasonable to require all kinds of art understandable to most people, we should respect the feature of artist and the taste of audience.
