The speaker claims that all faculty of the college and university should spend their time working in the professions relevant to the courses they teach so that the quality of instruction can be improved. As far as I am concerned, I agree that it is important for the teachers to apply their theory to practice. Meanwhile, it should also be pointed out that it is not necessary for the faculty in all academic areas to work outside the academic world.

Admittedly, under some circumstances it would bring lots of benefits if the teachers apply their speculative knowledge to the practical professions relevant to their own academic areas, especially in some applied disciplines such as business, engineering, laws, mechanics and so on. When the teachers combine the theory with the practical application, they will know more detailed information about the academic area, which would help them develop more impressed understanding of the relevant courses. Then, when they are teaching in class, they will provide the students with an insightful analysis of the course.  these details may be the important factors for the students to better understand the knowledge. For example, nowadays, many engineering teachers take the part time jobs in the technological companies, it may not only bring themselves with most up-to-date information of their academic disciplines but also provide their students with the chance to gain the working experience in the relevant areas such as the IT industry which can also help the students achieve the better learning.

However, there are some disciplines not aiming at applying their newly developed theory to the practical application in society, but exploring at the profoundness of science and the beauty of nature including mathematics, physics, art, philosophy , tec. When it comes to the teachers of these disciplines, it’s unnecessary for them to work outside the academic world, as there are no relevant professions in society in which they can get the assistance to help them become more effective when they are teaching. What they should do is remaining in the academic world and spending their time in the laboratories or libraries to develop their theories. For instance, We can hardly imagine that working outside university would help Chen Ning Yang won the Nobel prize nor achieved the important successes in the field of theoretical physics, not to mention improving the Princeton University’s quality of instruction.

Further, although the teachers may be benefited from their part-time jobs outside academic world more or less in their ability to teach vividly, something detrimental caused by the speaker’s recommendation such asthe utilitarian and fickleness would not only prevent students from enjoying the lessons by which instruction should be improved, but also badly influence the teaching lever of the college and university. As we all know that, the world outside universities is filled with the atmosphere of eagerness for instant success and quick profits, which make people more inclined to emphasize the importance of institution, subjective experience and simplified application of the theories. If the teachers join the professions outside the academic world, they would bring these principles into class consciously or unconsciously, which may weaken the students’ beliefs in persevering the essence of learning---the ability of logical thinking, the abstract reasoning, scientific analysis and so forth. If the most important targets of education in college and university are destroyed, how can we expect the students to absorb the knowledge effectively not to mention improving the quality of instrument at the college and university level.

In conclusion, it is unnecessary for all faculty to spend time working in the professions relevant to the courses they teach, as the teachers can search on internet or come to take part in the academic meetings to achieve the latest information in their disciplines to improve the quality of education, while working outside university may not promote the quality improvement of education but bring the detrimental influence to the overall quality of instrument.
