Whether money spent on research is a good investment is a complex issue. I concede that we should invest on research since many results of research benefit us a lot. Yet, in some cases, research which is fraught with potential problems should not be invested and the money can be used to solve more pressing social problem otherwise.(开头很好!简短但是两面都兼顾到了.)
There is no denial that results of researches bring us much benefit and we should invest on research. Through research we advance our knowledge in every fields of study, thus we make use of the advancement to benefit our lives. For instance, with the researches in biomedicine, we are able to cure many diseases by making all kinds of medicine and we can even treat the congenital diseases through gene therapies.(这个例子好,我要留下来用,呵呵) Another illustrating example involves our modern traffic. With the research results in physics and motor engineering, our trains run increasingly fast and the time we waste on the journey becomes shorter and shorter, therefore we can spend more time on work or on entertainment. In short, since with the result of the researches, we are able to enjoy better lives, it is worth to spend money on research.
Although research can offer us better lives, not all research is worth to invest, especially those that may cause potential problems. The results of research are hard to foresee, yet some research that is quite likely to breed lots of problems may do more harm than benefit to us. Thus to spend money on this kind of researches is unwise. Take the human cloning as an example. Although this research may help us know more about our body, it would bring about a lot of ethical and moral problems at the same time. If the research was successful, how do we identify the relationship among the cloning persons and normal persons? How do normal people think about them? Maybe normal people would consider them as monsters and there may be conflicts between normal people and cloned people. Even wars can happen between them.(这个例子说太罗嗦了,关键是没有太多说理,而且,我觉得这个例子更适合做正面一些的教材,毕竟克隆人还没有,但是克隆器官已经得到应用了.) So, the human cloning may breed lots of problems and even a disaster to humankind. Thus, research which may result in detrimental effect on people should not be invested.
Besides research, there are also many pressing social problems requiring money. If we spend undue money on research and insufficient money on these social problems, our society would not be harmonious. We should pay attention to the epidemic diseases, for example, AIDS, and spend money on curing those suffering from these diseases and educating the public to prevent them. Otherwise, more and more people might catch those diseases and even die. Moreover, we should spend enough money to help more children go to school and become educated citizens in future. Also, we should induce those who lost their jobs to study new technology and find new jobs. Otherwise, some of them may rob others’ property and disturb the society order. Therefore, sufficient money also should be spent on some pressing social problems.
In sum, money spent on research is worthy since we advance our knowledge and better our lives through research, yet some research that is full with significant problems should not be invested. Moreover, the pressing social problems also require money and we should strike balance in how to allocate the money.(这个观点不错)
这篇大家举的例子都很相似,不知道该从哪里突破一下. |
