TOPIC: ISSUE31 - "Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."
WORDS: 553

Whether money spent on research is a good investment is a complex issue. I concede that we should invest on research since many results of research benefit us a lot. Yet, in some cases, research which is fraught with potential problems should not be invested and the money can be used to solve more pressing social problem otherwise.

There is no denial that results of researches bring us much benefit and we should invest on research. Through research we advance our knowledge in every fields of study, thus we make use of the advancement to benefit our lives. For instance, with the researches in biomedicine, we are able to cure many diseases by making all kinds of medicine and we can even treat the congenital diseases through gene therapies. Another illustrating example involves our modern traffic. With the research results in physics and motor engineering, our trains run increasingly fast and the time we waste on the journey becomes shorter and shorter, therefore we can spend more time on work or on entertainment. In short, since with the result of the researches, we are able to enjoy better lives, it is worth to spend money on research.

Although research can offer us better lives, not all research is worth to invest, especially those that may cause potential problems. The results of research are hard to foresee, yet some research that is quite likely to breed lots of problems may do more harm than benefit to us. Thus to spend money on this kind of researches is unwise. Take the human cloning as an example. Although this research may help us know more about our body, it would bring about a lot of ethical and moral problems at the same time. If the research was successful, how do we identify the relationship among the cloning persons and normal persons? How do normal people think about them? Maybe normal people would consider them as monsters and there may be conflicts between normal people and cloned people. Even wars can happen between them. So, the human cloning may breed lots of problems and even a disaster to humankind. Thus, research which may result in detrimental effect on people should not be invested.

Besides research, there are also many pressing social problems requiring money. If we spend undue money on research and insufficient money on these social problems, our society would be not harmonious. We should pay attention to the epidemic diseases, for example, AIDS, and spend money on curing those suffering from these diseases and educating the public to prevent them. Otherwise, more and more people might catch those diseases and even die. Moreover, we should spend enough money to help more children go to school and become educated citizens in future. Also, we should induce those who lost their jobs to study new technology and find new jobs. Otherwise, some of them may rob others’ property and disturb the society order. Therefore, sufficient money also should be spent on some pressing social problems.

In sum, money spent on research is worthy since we advance our knowledge and better our lives through research, yet some research that is full with significant problems should not be invested. Moreover, the pressing social problems also require money and we should strike balance in how to allocate the money.

这篇大家举的例子都很相似,不知道该从哪里突破一下.

表明观点,不过那个in some cases,写具体一点就最好了

There is no denialthat results of researches bring us much benefit and we should investon research. Through research we advance our knowledge in every fieldsof study, thus we make use of the advancement to benefitour lives. For instance, with the researches in biomedicine, we areable to cure many diseases by making all kinds of medicine and we caneven treat the congenital diseases through gene therapies.Another illustrating example involves our modern traffic. With theresearch results in physics and motor engineering, our trains runincreasingly fast and the time we waste on the journey becomes shorterand shorter, therefore we can spend more time on work or onentertainment. In short, since with the result of the researches, weare able to enjoy better lives, it is worth to spend money on research.
这个观点的例子太多了,觉得那个disease的例子不错,但是后面的那个例子有一点特别,可以举一些更加普通的例子

Although research canoffer us better lives, not all research is worth to invest, especiallythose that may cause potential problems. The results of research arehard to foresee, yet some research that is quite likely to breed lotsof problems may do more harm than benefit to us. Thus to spend money onthis kind of researches is unwise. Take the human cloningas an example. Although this research may help us know more about ourbody, it would bring about a lot of ethical and moral problems at thesame time. If the research was successful, how do we identify therelationship among the cloning persons and normal persons? How donormal people think about them? Maybe normal people would consider themas monsters and there may be conflicts between normal people and clonedpeople. Even wars can happen between them.(感觉这几个文句在逻辑关系上比较散,不算平行,也不算递进) So, the human cloning maybreed lots of problems and even a disaster to humankind. Thus, researchwhich may result in detrimental effect on people should not be invested.
这个观点固然不错,但是有比较多的逻辑漏洞,那些引起problems的research就没有好的一面了吗?肯定有,所以应该是要说这些不好的一面 远远大于好的那一面,但是好的那一面不能一点也不讨论。

Besides research, there are also many pressing social problems requiring money. If wespend undue money on research and insufficient money on these socialproblems, our society would be not harmonious. We should pay attentionto the epidemic diseases, for example, AIDS, and spend money on curingthose suffering from these diseases and educating the public to preventthem. Otherwise, more and more people might catch those diseases andeven die. Moreover, we should spend enough money to help more childrengo to school and become educated citizens in future. Also, we shouldinduce those who lost their jobs to study new technology and find newjobs. Otherwise, some of them may rob others’ property and disturb thesociety order. (这句话和上面一句话的因果逻辑比较勉强)Therefore, sufficient money also should be spent on somepressing social problems.

In sum, money spent onresearch is worthy since we advance our knowledge and better our livesthrough research, yet some research that is full with significantproblems should not be invested. Moreover, the pressing social problemsalso require money and we should strike balance in how to allocate themoney.
结尾不错
