TOPIC: ISSUE184 - "It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data."
WORDS: 467          TIME: 00:44:44          DATE: 2007-7-28

The speaker asserts that theorizing before one has data is a grave mistake. I concede that data is quite important in advocating a theory, yet data is not indispensable to put forward a theory.

Admittedly, in many cases, data plays an important role in a new theory. On the one hand, some theories come from the data provided by experiments. Take the Traditional Genetics for example, Mendel had grown peas for eight years to collect the valuable data of the pea characters, based on which he advocated new theory in Traditional Genetics.  On the other hand, convincing theories require data to substantiate them. The theories which won Nobel Prize are all required substantial data to support them. Otherwise, the theories cannot be accepted. In short, data are important to theories.

However, great theories can be also based on some bold assumptions and genius imaginations. Those great theories always come from the inspiration of the scientists or the intellect of the genius. For example, Einstein's theory of relativity is completely based on the genius' imagination rather than any data. Although no one can provide substantial data to support the theory, it is accepted widely all around the world.  Another striking example involves the theory of continental drift. On the global map, Wegener found that the edges of the continents in the world seem to match with each other. Based on such inspiration, he assumed that the continents in the world were once joined together as a single land and then drifted apart. Then he advocated the famous theory of continental drift. Therefore, inspired by imaginations and assumptions, one can also put forward a theory.

Moreover, undue emphasis on data may limit developing new theories. Since the speeds of development of all study fields are different, there may be limitations to get all data that scientists require to substantiate their theories. If scientists adhere to the speaker's claim that they should not theorize before they have data, many significant theories may not be theorized today. Consider Stephen Hawking, one of the most famous theoretical physicists, his theory about the origin of our cosmos are accepted by the public and his book, A Brief History of Time is a global bestseller. Yet, he is unable to quote any accurate data in his theory because our measure methodology cannot provide a way to offer any data to support his theory. Stephen Hawking advocated a theory without data, and thus we can have a new perspective of our universe. Consequently, overly emphasizing on data actually impedes theorization and meanwhile the development of our knowledge.

In sum, data can help theorize and substantiate a new theory and is therefore very important to theorization. Yet, great theories can be theorized based on imaginations and assumptions without data. Moreover undue emphasis on data may impede theorizing.

In sum, data can help theorize and substantiate a new theory and is therefore very important to theorization. Yet, great theories can be theorized based on imaginations and assumptions without data. Moreover undue emphasis on data may impede theorizing.

ldongxp 写文章老成持重,并重视和善于收集例子。学习!
另外,个人感觉提出理论可能用propose 比advocate更好。
