The speaker asserts that people would separate politics and morality when they misunderstand them. At the first glance, this opinion seems to be somewhat convincing, but further reflection tells me that I cannot agree with it for the following reasons.

The first reason why I have such a view is that morality does harm to politics. To illustrate this point clearly we can see the instance noted in Chinese history that in an ancient war, the emperor of Song lost the best opportunity to attack the army of Chu when their enemy did not take their position. As a result, Song was defeated by his enemy, and the emperor died in the war. The grave mistake the emperor made is that he considered morality superior to politics—he refuse to attack the enemy for the reason that his enemy was not ready to fight. We can also say the loser of the war was the killed by morality. That is an obvious instance to show the opinion that morality really does harm to politics. Another evidence is THE MILIAN DIALOG. During the Peloponnesian War, Milos attempted to stay neutral and repeatedly refused to join the Athenian alliance. The refusing that Milos considered suitable to the morality caused the war between themselves and Athenian alliance. Morality destroyed the two countries above in some sense. Can we still assert that politics and morality were not separate realms?

The further reason is that politics and morality are always incompatible. Politics is defined as the art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs. So we can infer from the definition, politics is on the side of government’s benefits. Moreover the government has the contrary morality to the individual. So it is hard to confirm whether the politics is compatible or incompatible with the morality for the reason that politics may fit morality of government when it is on the opposite of individual morality. An obvious example is the Clinton’s sex scandal. For the individual morality, Bill Clinton must get away from his seat when the scandal was uncovered. But, Clinton lied to the public with the truth of the scandal for the reason that he is the president of America, who is in charge of the nation’s destiny and the people’s benefits. Politicians lie for their political reasons and government morality. So did Clinton.

Taking into account all these factors, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that we must consider politics and morality apart. Putting the two incompatible things together is likely to put the tiger and lion in the same cage. Neither of them will benefit. The truth shows us that politics and morality have their respective function in our society, even in the history. From the conclusion, we should treat politics and morality as separate realms.
