In our modern society, science and technology have become the main stream of human's thought. Somebody claims that those nonmainstream areas, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role as well. I concede they have some efforts to a certain extent, however, I could not agree that this kind of function is vital for a society.

Historically speaking, those so-called nonmainstream subjects can get the root from our ancient ancestor and are derived from the ignorance and the scare of the nature. They did not have enough power to conquer the nature force, just like an ant meet a stone. Therefore when the storms and forest fires coming, ancient people can not help to save his family's lives but only ascribing the sadness into the predeterminate fortune or the invisible force from the universe. Here the astrologist and fortune-teller came out and became the major leadership of certain society because they can 'predict' the future of a person or even a society.

With the advancing of science and technology, those areas of inquiry have become less and less important. Yet, when people meet a frustration, he might think, 'I must have a bad fortune recently!' Or someone who visited the psychic and paranormal pursuers wishes to be able to see his past families. Besides, a lot of people blame their divided mates with unmated constellation. By doing so, people can easily find an excuse of failure or the comfort of sadness. Those nonmainstream areas, in these cases, could satisfy human's mental needs and help them to get out from the sorrows.

However, it is unreasonable to overstate those influences which can only help people feel good and keep living instead of figuring the real problems out. The poor who looked for help from fortune-teller and then sitting for the fortune coming will never have his situation looked up. The sad people who immersed himself in the past memories will loss the chances of knowing new friends and enjoying his current life. Anyway, it is ourselves who should meet the real world and overcome the various failure and sadness. Fortune and stars could never bring us bread and cloth which are the first needs of our human being.

Definitely, such nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a rewarding role by satisfying human's mental needs. Yet we should not depend our lives and social future on them. Only the practical sciences which improve our living environment and human's untiring great efforts could be put on the first place.
