The speaker claims that society's ideas and values can be revealed by the way people look, dress and act. I totally agree with the speaker. People's appearance and behavior can serve as signs of the development of the society.
How and what people wear reflects the condition of a society, especially the economic situation. There are many examples supporting this in the history of economy. One example that aptly illustrates the point involves the "hemline theory". "Hemline theory" is a financial theory that stock prices move in the same direction as the hemline of women's dresses. So far, the theory has been quite accurate in United States. In the '20s and '60s, hemlines were at a high position and so was the stock market. And in the '30s and '40s, the stock market was so low that women were almost tripping on the dresses. The explanation to this theory is very simple. The stock market is usually symbolic of economy situation in one country. When the stock prices are high, it indicates the bullish market and aggressive economy progress. Under the prosperous economic circumstance, there were more jobs available for men. And with good salaries, men could afford and were more willing to buy women silk stockings which were extremely expensive back then. Thus, more women wore dresses at high hemlines to show their stockings. On the contrary, when the bearish market indicating conservative economy came, few men could afford silk stockings and thus women wore longer dresses. Now I would like to expand this example to a larger range. What and how people wear reflects not only the economy situation but also cultural atmosphere. In a more diverse and communication-loving society, people can accept new ideas more easily. And this acceptance externalize in people's wardrobe. People, with more options, can choose what ever they want to put on themselves without being scorned. In short, people's appearance is not exclusive a fashion issue any more, but also the indication of the society's economic and cultural development and we can tell these characteristics at ease simply by observing.
People's behavior, like people's appearance, also serves as a sign of society's development. Those trivial unnoticeable things might reveals how well both economy and spirit develop in the society .Take classified recycle of trash for example. In recent years, classified recycle of trash has become a trend in my county. And many cities have adopted and even more cities are going to adopt this new measure of recycling trash. And I can see various new trash cans specially designed for recycling on every street. This new trend of protecting environment reflects the society is prosperous in economy and spirit. Because on one hand, it is a sign that people are more able to pay for environment protection. After all, the update of those trash cans for recycling cost a lot and it can not be realized unless the guarantee of well-developed economy .On the other hand, it means that people are more willing to protect environment, which can not come true without the strengthening awareness of environment. What people can and are willing to do, are not spontaneous individual activities, they must be under the guidance of the society's values and bolstered by the society's material support. And that's why people's behavior, although seemly ostensible, is highly related to the inner of a society.
Actually, the root of the claim that society's ideas and values are reflected in people's appearance and behavior lies in materialism. According to materialism, everything in this world is connected in some way, which is a universal discipline. And nothing can survive at the state of isolation because they have to interact with others. Hence, it is not difficult to draw a conclusion that people's appearance and behavior, even they are superficial phenomena, are inextricably related to the deeper end of a society, and they are externalized performances of inner activities such as ideas and values, of a society.
In sum, we can know a lot about a society's ideas and values by observing people's appearance and behavior. By understanding their relations, sociologists are offered a new method of research that they can gaze into these externalizations for the running conditions of a society. And this will definitely help governors make more practical and better policies to boost the progress of the whole society. |
