argument65 [0710G +U Aug小组]第15次作业 In this memo from achain of cheese stores in the United States, the president claims that all oftheir stores should discontinue stocking the imported cheese in order to saveexpenses and improve profits. After a prudent study, however, we might findthere are some logistic problems which renders the argument unconvincing.First ofall, the president assumes that all of their stores sell domestic cheese betterthan imported one because the selling report from last year's new storeindicated so. Yet there is no evidence to prove this assumption. Absentevidence if this is the case, it is equally possible that this new store isopen at a countryside where the residents like domestic cheese only. While thelarge part of the stores in their chain sell both domestic and imported cheesewell. Therefore, it is unconvincing to conclude that the same situation happensin all of the chain-stores.Secondly,to illustrate people's preference of domestic cheese, the president cites a surveyresult from Cheeses of the World magazine. Regardless the reality of thissurvey, it is obtained from investigating the magazine subscribers. However, nofirm provided evidence could prove that the customers of this chain of cheesestores are the same people with the magazine subscribers. Thus, this surveyresult is not suit for support thepresident's claim(support怪怪的), and, consequently, weakens the argument.Thirdly, even if the domestic cheese sells better than the imported one in all over thecountry, it is still unreasonable to stop stocking varieties of importedcheese. On the contrast, the existence of imported cheese selling partdemonstrates that there must be some people who need those varieties cheese(cheese用复数,文章里就用复数)instead of single domestic cheddar cheese. Perhaps by discontinuing thestocking of those imported cheese, after a short period of stocking expensereducing, the stores will lose their attraction to customers as a result oflack of variety. In short, without explaining the other possible consequences,it is unreasonable to claim that concentrating only on domestic cheese mightimprove the profits.Inconclusion, this argument is not well supported as it claims. To strengthen itthe president should provide more and firm evidence that firstly, all thestores in their chain sell domestic cheese seriously better than the variousimported cheese; secondly, discontinuing the stocking of those imported cheesewill really improve the profits but not damage them. |
