In this issue, the author states that people ought to think and act independently and thereby make the best choices for them rather than emphasizing too much on role modeling. In my observation, the issue can be discussed in two aspects: study and making decisions in which role models functions differently hence are stressed differently.
First of all, in the realm of study, role models are essential especially when it comes to neophytes. The exemplary effects of models can be momentous and the advantages it brings along far outweigh the downsides. For the study of any subject of knowledge or skills, since s/he know little about what is about to be taught, a tyro has to copy the way a sophomore does in order to get on the track. For instance, a layman of English needs to memorize the alphabet to begin with, which is the methods practiced by countless predecessors, if s/he want to learn the language; a rookie of carpentry has to exercise the usage of seesaw first, which is repeated for generations in the apprenticeship. After all, the cliché of starting a new study may seem to be the copy of others, yet it is necessary at the same time since without the guidance a neophyte can hardly embark on a study. Moreover, the phase after beginning a study is always filled of role modeling and it is indispensable to the entire process as well. The mimic of the existence are tedious on the surface while it is the procedure toward mastery in nature. Consider these greatest painters in history such as Da vin ci, Van Gogh and etc. None of them became the brilliant artists inscribed in history without the repetition of basic sketching time after time. Consider these greatest mathematicians who amazingly solved the extremely difficult problems. None of them can succeed without the practicing of the fundamental operations to ensure the formulas rooted in mind. Therefore, the process of reiterating what have been done is necessary in the beginning phase of study in order to build the solid foundation for further study. Furthermore, even in the mid-period of a study of certain knowledge or skills, role models can still be quite helpful. Some detractors may claim that in such phase, people need to create by themselves instead of copying others. Though role modeling could fetter minds sometimes, it can provide inspiration as well. The crux of managing role models to assist creation is to borrow the essence and the suitable while skimming the dross rather than deserting works of other people utterly. Thereby, role modeling is actually emulation of others instead of pure copying. In sum, the status of role modeling is important in nearly every phase of the study of certain knowledge or skills for its superiority in instructions.
Second of all, when it comes to make decisions, role modeling plays a less crucial role comparing to that in study. As far as I am concerned, choice making is mixed with personal experiences and differences, hence role modeling is generally infeasible. Role modeling is particularly reckless in some life-altering decisions. For example, when one chooses a major when entering a college, s/he can not make the selection depending on what the majority of others do. Or a potential and gifted dancer could turn to be a lousy lawyer. Nevertheless, the effects of role modeling can not be obviated entirely. We are subconsciously influenced by it. Take the major-choosing example again, although we need to weigh the preferences we have, the talents we own and the benefits the choice can bring, the final decision are always affected by role models outside even without awareness——people lean to select the majors others succeed more often and it is especially obvious when they are stuck in a quandary of some choices with equal preference. Therefore, ration tells us to be outright isolated from outside influences while the reality informs us it can barely happen.
In conclusion, role model is quite essential in the process of study. And it the aspects of decision-making, it still take effects somehow even people tend to exclude its intervention subjectively.
