It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician."
I agree with the speaker's claim that for a effective political leader sometimes it is necessary, and even desirable to withhold information from the publics, otherwise we risk sacrificing national security and public safety. Nevertheless we must not allow a political leader undue freedom to withhold information in order to further self-motives, to advance personal agenda.
One reason for my fundamental agreement with the speaker is that in a game of politics, complete forthrightness is absolute a naivete to serve the interests of the publics, and even which those opponents will use to every advantage to defeat the politician. An effective leader should first learn to how to gain and maintain political power. As we all known, in the game of president election, the personal foibles, character flaws of the politician would easily be the punching bags from the opponents. From this angle, complete honesty seems nothing to do with a effective political career, after all the game is realistic.
Another reason why I essentially agree with the speaker is that telling the truth to the public is not useful means to solve the problems, and even sometimes would threaten the national security and public safety. For example, during the Cold-war between the U.S. and the Soviete, can you imagine when the U.S. leader to tell all the truth-that is, fully disclosing information to the opponent, the result is surely terrible. At this point, completer honesty has little place in enhancing the national security. Maintaining a strict silence on the truth sometimes for a effective politician is to avoid public panic. Consider, the event- UFO crashed at Roswell, to prevent the massive panic created by the accident, the U.S. government had to hold the information about Roswell. Since telling the truth would have served no useful purpose and even have resulted in mass hysteria.
However, sometimes political leaders need to compromise. Indeed, a leader is on behalf of a group of people, not only for himself or herself. We recognized withholding information is often necessary on the base of benefits from the publics , but not on the benefits of self-motives. The publics could not accept any dishonesty politicians as to server individual ambition. Consider the President Nixon's deceiving the truth in the Watergate event, such behavior demonstrated his concern for his self-interests above the citizenry. As a result ,cheating and deceiving the publics can have a deleterious social consequence.
To sum up, I concede honesty is dipensable virtue of a outstanding politician. Howerer, in the game among the politicians, undue complete honesty can be counterproductive, and even harmful for the nation, an effective political leader must learn to acknowledge the interests of the publics should be place at the first place.
