TOPIC: ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

In this argument,the sales of Whirlwind video games are assumed  to have a dramatical increase in the next few months.The aruger cites several facts to support his assumption.But I find this argument lies many critical fallacies some of which will be discussed below.

First of all,the argument provides no details about the survey and may the survey unreliable. The arguer should tell us how the survey is made,at least we should  know how many respondents are there in the survey and how old are they.If there are too few respondents,the result of the survey couldn't be ensured to show the general idea of all VG players.And if the respondents are not in the age group of 10 to 25,the survey would be totally invalid to give any infomation of the 10-to-25  year old people.So,without further details,any  conclusion based on the survey would be premature.
In addition,the reasons for the declined sales of Whirlwind VG over the past two years are needed to be analyzed .If the declined sales  resulted  in the high price of VG games ,what Whirlwind needs to do is to adjust the prices of its products.If it was the poor features of the games led to the decline ,Whirlwind should introduce more games favored by the customers .And if the unafordability of up-to-date computers blocks the players to buy new games,the company should make efforts to weaken the game demands to computer configuration.So in order to make right changes the arguer must take the cause of the prior failure into consideration.
Last but not least,the arguer ignores the conditon of Whirlwind's competitors  which would greatly influence  the sale of Whirlwind.The arguer tell us nothing about Whirlwind's competitors.How about the price of other companies products?What comes if the other companies introduce the same kinds of VG games as whirlwind will do?Will they also perform an extensive advertising campaign?and there is many other questions like these can be asked,all of which will affect the sale of Whirlwind's games.
In sum,the argument troubles in many ways and the conclusion is very problematic.To make the conclusion persuasive ,the arguer needs at least show further details about the survey ,analyze the reasons for the sales declining before and give some info about the competitors.
