TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
Can the greatness of individuals be decidedby their contemporaries or only by the people who live after them? I concedethis question should be answered case-by-case instead of a hastygeneralization. In sum, the people who live after can value one's greatness moreperspectival than the contemporaries.
The people who live after these individualshave many advantages when estimate their greatness. They can get moreinformation about these individuals and can see what results form their workafter a period of time. For instance, an important invention often needs timeto prove its importance. When Faraday showed his electric dynamo, the ancestorof modern generator, many people thought that it was usefulness. However, today, our modern culture cannot continue without generators. Furthermore, especiallyfor the evaluation of political leaders, the estimation given by people wholive after them can be more objective. Stalin, who was considered as greatleader by most of his people when he was living, has got a more objectiveevaluation by us nowadays.
Compared with the people live after these individuals, their contemporaries have many disadvantages. The great minds often exceedtheir contemporaries' understanding, or they may be flooded by the numerouscontemporary thoughts, so they are likely to be overlooked by contemporaries. For example, through years of unknown study in pea plants, Gregor Mendel, anAustrian Augustinian priest and scientist, found the inheritance of traitsfollows particular laws, which were later named after him. But when hepublished his paper, he received plenty of criticism. And unfortunately, almostat the same time, Darwin came up with his natural selection theory, and peoplewere soon attracted by it, so Mendel's work did not arose contemporaries'attention until twentieth century.
However, the estimation given by thecontemporaries are often very important. The contemporaries can acquaint theindividuals by getting touch with the live people rather than just reading thestories from books, so they can observe the individuals' appearances moredirectly and thus their description is more real. And some people, likeEinstein, Newton,Mozart and Picasso, are so outstanding that received the evaluation of great bytheir contemporaries.
To summarize, the evaluation by the people wholive after are more acute and objective. If the evaluation of the same people bythe contemporaries and the people who live after are different, we had better believethe latter one. |
