题目:ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

The arguer tries to convince that Elm City University (ECU) should give their Professor Thomas a raise of $10,000 in salary and promote her as Department Chairperson, with some seemingly reasonable cause. Yet, a further examination will reveal that these reasons insufficiently lends support to the arguer's proposal
First of all, the amount of students in Ms. Thomas's class is not a necessary indication of her teaching skills. Perhaps the curriculum requires these students to take her lesson, or perhaps the students just feel such a lesson could be useful in their future career. In one word, it is probably because what she teaches rather than how well she teaches that makes her popular among the students. In this case, any teacher teaching the same course will receive an equal welcome. If the arguer really wants identify her teaching ability, s/he should conduct a survey to investigate if the students enjoy her class and really learn something for it.
Furthermore, it is unreasonable to judge a professor's research ability just depends on the amount of his or her research grants. We all knows that some subjects always receive a usually big amount of research grants, while some subjects like math and literature often acquire a relatively low amount. But this situation does not mean that professors in math and literature have inferior research abilities compared with professor in other fields. There are certain methods to evaluate a professor's research ability like inspect how many essays s/he published and on what periodicals. The arguer should use these ways to attest Professor Thomas's research ability.
Finally, even if this professor is important to ECU, the fear for her leave is unnecessary, since no evidence shows that the professor is not content with her salary or her position. Moreover, if there is indeed any dissatisfaction, the arguer should have a talk with her and discover what makes her feel so. If she is not content with the research condition in the ECU, just raise her salary and promote her cannot make her stay.
In sum, albeit an outstanding professor with superior teaching and research abilities is important to the university, it is nevertheless too hasty to assert that Ms Thomas is such a professor. Before the committee reaches the final decision, they should inspect Ms Thomas's skills in teaching and research comprehensively, and find out whether she is going to leave and whether the raise in salary and promotion can make her stay.
