In thismemo, theauthor asserts that all the stores should concentrate on domesticcheese, To support the assertion, the authorcites the fact that last year, the domestic cheese had been more popular thanthe imported cheese in our newest stores, moreover,a survey reveals the same. It seems reasonable at thefirst glance, but analyzed deeply, the argument suffers form several logicalflaws. We can deduce it form three respects below.
The fistproblem of the argument involves the sale of the cheeses from Wisconsin. As the author mentions, the five best-selling cheesesat the newest store were all domestic cheddar from Wisconsin. But, the good sale of the newestcheeses do not means they will be sold well in all the stores. Maybe the reasonis the prices of the new stores are low or the new stores are in certain placeswhere the people prefer the taste of Wisconsincheeses. On theother side, there arenot enough evidences to prove that the Wisconsincheeses will be sold well constantly in the future. So, lacking information about the sale in new stores, theauthor may be too hasty to draw the conclusion.
On thesecond place, whether the survey is reliability is dubious, as the authorsays the survey was directed at thesubscribers of a magazine. But we do not known the reader-group of themagazine. So we can not eliminate the possibility that the subscribers preferdomestic cheeses specially. On the other side,if the number of the subscribers is small, then the sample will be notstatistically significant, and the respondents will be not representative ofthe consumers ingeneral
The lastflaw which undermines the argument is the strategy which may be adopted inlight of the author,Firstly, if all the stores concentrate the primarily on domestic cheeses, theneeds of the consumers who prefer the imported cheeses will not be met. It willbe not good for the brand of the stores. Secondly, even the imported cheese donot have a good sale, it do not means they will be popular in the future. So,the decision may be not good for the long-term development of the stores.
In sum,the argument is logically unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen theassertion theauthor should provide more information about the sale of the imported cheesesand the domestic cheeses; moreover,a detailed market survey is necessary for the president to make a properdecision.
issue: As we all know, aperson's education is the most important aspect of his/her life. So, as theeducators, what they chose to do will affect the students greatly.
The speak thinkthat the students' needs and interests should be satisfied, and only from this can education beeffective, well, as far as I see, I can not agree with the speaker.
Admittedly, interestis playing a very important role in one's education. In some sense, education is the power ofstudy. Without interests, Thomas Edison could not invent light, withoutinterests, Columbus could not find the Americacontinent, without interests, Bele could not be the greatest football player. In my view, the strong interest plays the same role as the catalyzer in thechemical reaction. It greatly increases the speed.
I can not imaginethat students will accept the knowledge when they study without interests. Wehave all experiences that in a classroom, where the course is boring to most ofthe students, how dreary is the atmosphere. for many students do not focusthemselves on the course, they may sleep, look at other books, or even leave the classroom. Forcing them to study provednot a good method, consider, for example, in China, almost all the students study for the score, therefore, manystudents can not study what they really like to. So some of them begin to hatestudying, teacher, and even suffer from mental illnesses. So, it is necessaryfor educator respect the interests of the students.
But, it may noteffective to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. Thereasons involve three aspects, firstly, it is not feasibly to meet the needs of all the students, forthe reason that, compared with the students the resources of education is less.If huge sums of money are paid for education, then other aspects such as medicaltreatment, traffic, entertainment will not be ensured. Secondly, even if thestudent has some interests in some courses, it does not mean that in the futurehe will like the course as before, and vice versa. For example, before GeorgeHoward Darwin studied biology, he was a theology student in the University of Cambridge, in this sense, studying some certaincourses too early may be a waste of the resources of education. Thirdly, eventhough the students show nothing about interests on some certain courses, someof the courses are so useful that, they can not be abandoned. For students of liberalart, it will be necessary to own some science knowledge, and for science students, it can cultivate theirmind to read some literatures.
Allin all, the interests of students should be respect and satisfied to someextent, but excessly meeting the needs and the interests of the student will beunreasonable or even plays a navigate role.
