题目:ARGUMENT145 - A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person-often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed-and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

In this argument, the arguer suggest anyone who snores should try to eat less and exercise more in respect that they are likely to gain weight and feel tired during the day. Though this suggestion seems to be appealing at first glance, a close scrutiny to the evidence and reasoning in this argument would reveal that it suffers from at least two flaws.

First of all, the arguer does not provide any evidence to prove that gain weight of the people who snores has a relationship between eating too much. There could be other factors rather than diet that eventually makes them gain weight, for example the genetic factors. It is possible that the gene of human decides that those people who snore will be likely to gain weight, no matter how much this guy eats. Therefore, it is unreasonable to attribute the gain weight to eating too much. Moreover, it is equally possible that it is not that people who snore are likely to gain weight but the fat people are likely to snore. If so, they could be fat for any reasons and eating less may not be helpful to them.

Furthermore, there are not any sufficient reasons showing that there is a need for the people who snored to sleep to exercise more. On one hand, the sleep apnea may not affect people's sleep and makes people more likely to feel tired as the arguer states. There is no evidence in the argument to support it but a hasty assertion. On the other hand, even if we believe the sleep apnea indeed makes people feel tired, the suggestion of exercise more is not acceptable. Now that these people are likely to feel tired during the day, exercise too much may affect their health and makes them more tired.

In sum, the study on the weight of people who snores and the effect of sleep apnea does not lend sufficient support to the suggestion of eat less and exercise more, and the arguer failed to mention the aim of it in this argument. Therefore, the suggestion should not be accepted until receiving a further investigation. The investigation should inspect the real reason that makes these people to gain weight and whether exercise more will do good to their health.
