Argument 145
A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.       WORDS: 513        DATE: 2007-10-31

In this argument, the author concludes that any person who snores should try to eat less and exercise more than the average person. At first glance, the author’s reasoning seems to be appealing, while clearly examining the author’s reasoning, we may find that it is unconvincing. The argument contains several facets that are questionable.
First of all, the speaker fails to posit an unequivocal causal relationship between snoring and gaining weight. As far as we know, people with low sleep quality are more likely to lose weight rather than gain it. Since the snorers who suffer frequent snore interruption with their sleep which wakes them at night, how can they gain weight more easily? It might well be the very contrary, that is, it is fat that causes snore, instead of vice versa. The arguer needs to refute this common sense to make his premise sound and convincing enough.
Even if snoring has been proved to be a cause of fat, the arguer still neglects many other possible causes that may also lead to the result. As we know, such factors as some other medical condition, or some other trait or habit, can cause snoring also cause weight gain, too. It will be a fallacious reasoning unless the author can provide persuasive evidences to rule out any other possibilities.
Moreover, what percent of people who snore actually suffer from sleep apnea and gain weight as a result? Obviously, author does not provide enough information on the subjects of the survey. It is entirely possible that some- or perhaps even most snorers do not suffer from sleep apnea, or are not too tired to exercise, or do not in any event tend to become fatter. If the respondents only stand for a tiny proportion of the whole group, we should not be so sure about the conclusion that the whole group snoring suffer from sleep apnea and tend to gain weight as a result. Thus the speaker’s advice that “anyone who snores” should try to eat less and to exercise is unwarranted.

Even assuming that the arguer’s advice were modified as indicated above, the arguer fails to demonstrate that eating less and exercising more would necessarily result in losing weight. Does that really help them reduce weight? If so, why should they do that if they are not overweight at all? Also if a person who suffers sleep apnea is too tired to exercise, then simply advising him to exercise is pen to question: What if he exercises more and snores more at night and causes a malicious biological cycle? In other words, now that those snoring people have fewer sleeping hours and are rather tired, if they were still asked to eat less and exercise more, their healthy might be at stake.
To sum up, the conclusion that “any” snorer should exercise more and eat less lacks of credibility. Regardless of who the author is, he or she has chosen to ignore many aspects of his or her conclusion. To strengthen the conclusion, the author should give more evidences about the above-mentioned possibilities.
对Argu还很没感觉,求好心人狂拍,可以的话指点下该怎样准备A,谢谢谢谢!~

argument145修改

In this argument, the author concludes that any person who snores should try to eat less and exercise more than the average person. At first glance, the author’s reasoning seems to be appealing, while clearly examining the author’s reasoning, we may find that it is unconvincing. The argument contains several facets that are questionable.[1]
First of all, the speaker fails to posit [2]an unequivocal causal relationship between snoring and gaining weight. As far as we know, people with low sleep quality are more likely to lose weight rather than gain it. Since the snorers who suffer frequent snore interruption with their sleep which wakes them at night, how can they gain weight more easily?[3] It might well be the very contrary, that is, it is fat that causes snore, instead of vice versa. The arguer needs to refute this common sense to make his premise sound and convincing enough.

Even if snoring has been proved to be a cause of fat, the arguer still neglects many other possible causes that may also lead to the result. As we know, such factors as some other medical condition, or some other trait or habit, can cause snoring[5] also cause weight gain, too. It will be a fallacious reasoning unless the author can provide persuasive evidences to rule out any other possibilities.
Moreover, what percent of people who snore actually suffer from sleep apnea and gain weight as a result? Obviously, author does not provide enough information on the subjects of the survey. It is entirely possible that some-【6】 or perhaps even most snorers do not suffer from sleep apnea, or are not too tired to exercise, or do not in any event tend 【7】to become fatter.

If so, why should they do that if they are not overweight at all[4]? Also if a person who suffers sleep apnea is too tired to exercise, then simply advising him to exercise is pen[8] to question: What if he exercises more and snores more at night and causes a malicious biological cycle【9】? In other words, now that those snoring people have fewer sleeping hours and are rather tired, if they were still asked to eat less and exercise more, their healthy might be at stake.
To sum up, the conclusion that “any” snorer should exercise more and eat less lacks of credibility. Regardless of who the author is, he or she has chosen to ignore many aspects of his or her conclusion. To strengthen the conclusion, the author should give more evidences about the above-mentioned possibilities.
[1]第一段开始一般都是写完作者的结论后,用一到两句话描述一下他的论据,比如:to strength this recommendation the author cites...最好再用一句话指出这篇argument有缺陷。如:this argument is logically flawed in several critical respects.
[2]这里可以用establish
[3]这一句,前面的since 和后面以how引起的疑问相搭配似乎有点奇怪。后面那句,可以直接用陈述语气。
   另外since 引导的从句好像缺了谓语。
是否可以改为:since the snorers suffer from frequent snore interruption during their sleep leading to their tired during daytime, they can not gain weight easily.

[4]这句话有点模棱两可,如果 so 指的是exercising and eat less can not help them reduce weight, 则后面的那句应该为:
why should people snoring do them if they take no effect at all.
[5]加个and吧
