In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries.
------正文------
In every realms of inquiry, both the beginners and the experts contribute to the progress. However, when it comes to the one who is more likely to come up with paramount discoveries, I tend to largely agree with the author that the possibility for a newcomer to make important discoveries is remarkably higher than that of the expert.
Admittedly, experts indeed contain certain qualities that facilitate them to great achievements and discoveries in specific field. With rich experience and information from the presidents, experts in any realm of inquiry display outstanding analysis abilities as well as problem-solving capacities, which enable them to make significant discoveries. By contrast, lack of certain experience and being ill informed of the predecessors' work, beginners tend to overlook some details that might lead to defections in their research, frustrating their desires to make breakthroughs. For instance, an experienced geologist could easily recognize a fossil from a pile of similar rocks while a newcomer is likely to mistake it to a common rock with little value.
However, in most cases, the seeming advantages that the experts are equipped with rich experience would turn out to be an obstacle compared with the beginners.. For one thing, partly because the experts are so well informed of the former researches and discoveries by their presidents, the experts usually take numerous apparently trivial phenomenons for granted. Meanwhile the newcomers with free mind may cast doubt on the overlooked phenomenon and reexamine them in an original way, leading to significant discoveries. One of the experts in the pharmacy school of our university pointed out (and I paraphrase) that their discoveries in specific field turn beginners to experts while if anyone desire to make further discoveries, he or she must return to the state as a newcomer again. For another, on most occasions, the experts make progress through improving or reforming the existing knowledge thus they are unlikely to escape from the past achievements of their ancestors. By contrast, the novice, who knows little about the existing dos and don'ts, contains the courage to try something that might be never thought of before. For instance, a first-year PhD student in my university adopted molecular method so that he manage to trace the precise location in the brain where the peptide hormones are released. By contrast, the experts in physiology have long been blocked by limited methods narrowly within medicine. In a word, a newcomer tends to adopt creative problem-solving strategies that lead to important discoveries in their specific field of inquiries.
Additionally, the curiosity and desire for recognition serve as pressure for the newcomers to make remarkable endeavor in their work, which could be a stimuli for making great discoveries. Driven by the pressure to stand out from their peer in the same group or in the same field of inquiry, the beginners have to devote themselves to the research. In any field of inquiry, people have to face with fierce competition both within the group and outside the group. However, for newcomers, no previous achievements could enable them to capture others’ attention to their talent or points of views. Therefore, the desire and pressure form a powerful force to motivate the beginners to make discoveries. On the other hand, the experts, whose achievements have been recognized and received respect form the society or colleagues, are more likely to relax and lose their motivation to make further breakthroughs. Isaac Newton, who made one of the paramount discoveries in modern science in his twenties, made no significant contributions in his later life when he was considered as the top expert in Physics at his time.
In sum, both the experts and the newcomers in certain field have contributed to the progress in any field of inquiry while the beginners are more likely to make such discoveries because they are free form the limitation of the experience and are under greater pressure. And for that matter, newcomers’ views should be attached sufficient importance on.
