"A nationwide survey reveals that a sizeable majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television. After television station WACK increased its sports broadcasts, its share of the television audience in its viewing area almost doubled. To gain a larger audience share in our
area, and thus increase company profits, KICK should also revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage."
This article concludes that KICK should amend its broadcast schedule in order to attract more sports coverage and to gain a larger audience in its area as well as increase company profits. To justify this conclusion the author cites a nationwide survey indicated that a sizeable majority of men like to see additional sports programs on television. The author also notes that the television audience of television station WACK almost doubled after it increased its sports broadcasts. The argument is well--presented, but not thoroughly well--reasoned.
Firstly, the increasing television audiences of WACK do not necessarily indicate that people become more like to watch sports games. Perhaps during this time , people are having a holiday or vacation, thus they have more time to spend, and even perhaps other television program are amending ,so people have time to adapt to the new schedule, and other programs of WACK are better than before, as a result somebody come to the WACK program.
Secondly, even if the audience of the sports broadcast is doubled, the fact is little indication that it is the people interest of sports TV have increased. Maybe, there is a vital play game or such Olympic games is processing, and perhaps ,at the same time the audience's area have a team or certain players are playing, or perhaps people like some player is a mouthpiece of a product. However, all these phenomenon last a short time.
Thirdly, the increasing people's interest do not indicate people's interest will last for a long time. What the public care is often changed with the time goes on. Even they interest are not changed, there will be other approaches to get information about sports.
Finally, even assuming there will not other means to captive e audience and the interest is lasting, the recommendation rests on two additional assumptions: (1) The audience will prefer KICK program over other television stations' program. (2) Majority of the audience will not move to other place which is beyond the broadcast.
In sum, to convince me that KICK will have a profit by revising schedule to include sports coverage, KICK should make sure the people is really like watch sports coverage and their preference will not reduce.
