88. "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics." I largely agree with the author's opinion that certain aspects of social customs and ethics are often influenced and even determined by technology. Nevertheless, some excellent morals almost have no change all the time, it is the fact that technology and social moral influence each other.
One compelling reason has to do with the fact that certain customs and ethics such as freedom, equality, fraternity, are as popular today as ever. Primarily, everybody owns the freedom of speech and act regardless of color, race and creed which is the same as our old generation. Each citizen can choose his or her occupations and mean of living according to his interest and character traits as before. What is more, every one is created equal. We are entitled to gain education, applying vocation, participating games as our parents, Additionally, every citizen, many of us believe, is likely to devote himself to his country as the U.S. founder contributed themselves to the development of the nation. The Red Cross serves the whole world from its establishment. All these morals exist today in the never--ending technology environment with the same they maintained in 19th century without TV and internet, mobile phone.
On the other hand, the technology makes us indifferent than before in the sake of the rapid advance of technology and the use of technology deplete too much of our time. Convinced the online chat rooms, we readily chat with strangers through without face to face communication but not likely to talk with our fellowmen. Products are made by automation machines in grim factories while people gossiped together and consulted with each many years ago. Moreover, every technological advance demands our time and attention--in order to learn how to use the new technology, Time devoted to keeping pace with technology depletes time for us staying with others. What is more, people spent more time working today than before. In 1963, the average U.S. family included only one breadwinner, who worked just 40 hours per work while the average work week has increased to nearly 60 hours today, most included two breadwinners. We are distracted from confronting ourselves and each other as well as we have less time for life and we are becoming less and less care about others.
Another compelling fact is that some people's sense of worth has been distorted by the technology. There are lots of scientists try they best to device war arms by using the biotechnology and medical technology without consideration the social safety and national security. Partly people cut what corners in order to content private interest by endangering personal and national interests. Some geek stole other's emails and private information, to say nothing of attack public web. Even some national security files are exposed to other nation for exchange money. Committing a crime on net carries serious social consequence. More worse, politician like Nixon made Watergate matter by using the technology.
And I believe that the technology and moral influence each other. However, the foregoing harmfulness is not the fault of the technology, in fact, it is our com. On the one hand, our present customs and ethics partly decide the direction of newest technology, such as we research the best approach to solving social problem, disaster, hunger. On the other hand, the advent of new things challenges our existing morals like the colon animals and the fact that drugs can be used as medicine.
To sum up, some morals will not extinguish with the coming of technology. The technology influences merely some aspect of our morals and our moral influence the development in turn. We should look for a better balance between the technology and moral for the technology can severe human being better. |
