ISSUE36 "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
[Outline]: 1、
Text:
Can only greatness of individuals be judged after they died by those who live after, as the speaker insist? In my point of view, the speaker didn’t tell the exact truth of what we got during human’s history. It really depends, as great people who change human being’s life come from various realms, some of them make it come true immediately, while some don’t.
Generally, we do not necessarily consider technical innovation a thing which needs to be recognized by people live dozens of years later. It is the people who get the real profit from the innovation lead by the individuals we call giants, has the right to judge whether those who create eximious technical regenerateness get the honor of what we call greatness. There is nothing left to be later proved or disproved, affirmed or discredited. History is replete with such examples. Edison invented plenty of equipments and technologies, most of them were not so large as aircraft but definitely made people’s life much easier, like bulbs. Again, Watt invented steam engine which was soon accepted by the public at that time and lead a persistent and climbing trend of innovation what we call ‘industrial revolution’. Both of them were admitted as greatness at the very time they lived. The reason for this is simple: most technologies can be judged by the market immediately when they were developed, and we don’t need a longtime research or proof to get an answer about whether they will be useful in the future.
By contrast, in the field of theory research, like mathematics, physics, biology, etc, it is difficult to identify greatness without a long-range examination by numerous scientists of historical perspective. Any scientific theory could be pulled down entirely because of a wrong theory basis or disproved by a single counterexample. Theory scientists can not be recognized as greatness except their theories have been proved by the scientists after or by the practice which become realistic in the future but not for then. On the other hand, right theories are not always accepted by the moment they are created. When the first person told people that everyone lived on a globular object rather than a smooth and square ground as the pontifex told, everybody thought he was crazy and sentenced him to death. And also the first person who thought earth was not the center of the universe by calculating and deducing had a tough life because people at that time could not believe him. Similar condition can be found in the field of politics where forerunners are not always the popular person at that age. Consequently, greatness in such fields should be decided by those who live after.
In the realm of art, things are different as some kinds of art are recognized easily by the public because of their face value, while some other kinds are not because of their abstract. Mozart’s music was already very famous and popular at his live time which made him one of the most excellent musicians throughout the world. Vincent Van Gogh was not so lucky compared to Mozart, he painted the distinguished picture ‘helianthus’ which worth of millions of dollars and most highly fame in nowadays, however when he was alive, he was not understood by people and died lonely.
To sum up, the speaker’s point about greatness is unilateral. He might have ignored those who have a great contribution in the field of technology and art and were given great honor even during their own time. Nevertheless, other giants with great achievements, especially theory research, may not be confirmed in a short time.
