Argument147 【0806G desperado小组】第一次作业
------题目------
The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
'Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months.'

In this argument, the arguer concludes that the sales of Whirlwind video games are going to increase in the future. To support the conclusion, the arguer points out that 10  to 25 years old players will buy Whirlwind video games which provide lifelike graphics. However, a careful examination of this argument would reveal how groundless it is.

In the first place, the arguer provides no assurances that the survey on which the argument depends is statistically reliable. The survey lacks information about people who are surveyed and the number of respondents, it is impossible to assess the validity of the results. Moreover, it is also possible that players do not like the kind of game any more, because we do not know how many times have been going through since the survey being conducted.

In the second place, the lifelike graphics required the most up-to-date computers, which needed more money for player to buy it. Thus, many players who do not have enough money is likely to play other games instead of it.

The last but is not the least, the company conducted advertising campaign to people who is about 10 to 25 years old, this seems to useful for they to buy the video, but it is not that fact. We all know that boys and girls do not like to watch TV which the advertising is presented in it, the result maybe that young people do not buy the video for they do not know the games at all.

In sum, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it more convincing, the arguer would have to provide more information about the survey, and to provide more evidence concerning that 10 to 25 years old players could buy such games.
