------题目------
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'
The argument concludes that for fear of Professor Thomas's leaving, the university should give her a raise on salary and a promotion to Department Chairperson. However, the author doesn't give any evidence that Professor Thomas is about to leave or that she will be satisfied with the promotion and salary raise. In fact, there are several logical faults in the argument make it unconvincing as it states.
First of all, the author rests on the phenomenon that the Professor Thomas's classes are among the largest at the university, and concludes that she is popular among students. However, it is entirely possible that other causes let students go to her classes. Perhaps since her courses are fundamental and required subjects that most students have to study. Or perhaps students choose her classes because her course’s exams are easy to pass. Accordingly, the population in her classes and her popularity has no cause-and-result relationship.
Secondly, the author refers to the money she brought to the university in research grants last two years to claim her research abilities. Nevertheless, it is not the case. Professor Thomas has been in the university for seventeen years, only two years information about the research grants is not enough for a complete understanding. Perhaps in last fifteen years, the professor Thomas brought less research grants than her salaries. Even if she is good at achieving research grant, it is yet not sufficient to approbate her research ability. Research ability contains many aspects, such as quality and quantity of research papers, research achievements and so on. Without such evidence, the author's claim is doubt at best.
Even if that Professor Thomas has good teaching and research abilities, we cannot be convinced that through a $10,000 raise and a promotion for her, she will stay in Elm City University. Firstly, there are no evidences that Professor Thomas will leave Elm University for another college. It is possible that she has been here for seventeen years that she has a deep sentiment with the Elm City University; she will stay here in the future. Secondly, we are not noticed that professor will leave because her salary is low and she does not have promotion. If it is the case, a $10,000 raise and a promotion will not help to stay her. Perhaps some other colleges have other condition except money and positions attract her, such as the academic atmosphere, friendly colleague relationship, etc. Thirdly, what qualification is needed for a Department Chairperson? The author does not mention that whether professor is suitable for being the Department chairperson. In sum, the recommendation of promotions and salaries seems hasty.
In conclusion, the argument is unsubstantiated. To strengthen the recommendation, the arguer needs to point out more information to support that she has good teaching and researching abilities. Additionally, more evidence about the Professor Thomas's attitude towards the salary, the position and other conditions are needed. |
