------题目------
The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
'For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses.'

The president of a chain of cheese stores recommends discontinue stocking imported cheese is the best way to improve profits in all of their stores. However, a close scrutiny reveals that domestic cheese sales in one store and a recent survey by a magazine provide little evidence for the recommendation. Additionally, it seems unwarranted to say the recommendation is the best way to improve profits.
First of all, the argument assumes that the sales trend in one store reflects the general trend upon which the argument relies. Yet, the president fails to offer any evidence to substantiate this crucial assumption. Absent such evidence, it is just as likely that in the US where cheese stores locates people are not incline to domestic cheeses; for that matter, perhaps in the US the sales trend is in the opposite direction, in which event the president's recommendation would amount to especially poor advice.
Secondly, it is unreasonable to draw any conclusion about the popularity of domestic cheeses in the US based on a recent survey of the World magazine. Depending on the total number of cheeses' purchasers in the US, it is entirely possible that the World magazine's subscribers are not representative of the cheeses' purchasers all over the US. For example, perhaps the subscribers' population is a small percentage of the total population in the US. If so, would serve to undermine the president's recommendation.
Thirdly, even if most residents in the US prefer purchasing domestic cheeses, it is insufficient to draw any conclusion that discontinue stocking imported cheese will promote profits. There is no information about the profit of domestic cheeses and imported cheeses. It is entirely possible that the profit of imported cheese is much higher than the domestic cheese's. If it is the case, no longer stocking imported cheese will probably decrease the profit of stores.
Last, the president fails to consider any other alternative methods that might help to attain the same effect. Perhaps, by increasing amazing advertisements of the company, the company can attract more potential customers and effectively achieve the economical goal of improving profits. In short, without weighing the proposal against alternatives, the president's claim that no longer stocking domestic cheeses is the "best" means of achieving profit improvement is wholly unconvincing.
To sum up, the recommendation is not convincing as it states. To bolster the recommendation the president must provide clear evidence that residents in the US in fact prefer domestic cheeses to imported cheeses. And we would need more information about the profits of domestic and imported cheeses, and other influencing factors on the profits in all stores. |
