ARGUMENT 15 The following appeared in a newsletter offering advice to investors.

"Over 80 percent of the respondents to a recent survey indicated a desire to reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol, and today low-fat products abound in many food stores. Since many of the food products currently marketed by Old Dairy Industries are high in fat and cholesterol, the company's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubt decrease. We therefore advise Old Dairy stockholders to sell their shares and other investors not to purchase stock in this company."

In this editorial the author asserts that Old Dairy Industries is not valuable to invest any more for the reason that he deduces a conclusion that the company’s sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will decrease because of its high-fat and cholesterol products, from the a survey that over 80 percent of the respondents desire to reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol and low-fat products abound in many food stores. It seems well-presented in one respect, however, the evidence lends little credible support for the argument.

First of all, the survey that the author provides is inadequate to justify the conclusion drawn from it. There is no evidence to show that the foods containing fats and cholesterol are the unique criterion for people to choose food products. Some other factors may influence people’s decision, such as taste, price, brand and so on. Moreover, people’s desirability is usually more or less different from their behavior, and preferring low-fat foods doesn’t mean excluding the high-fat products. Maybe both of them would be pleasing one’s taste. And that, from the survey we find little sigh to show whether the respondents constitute a sufficiently large sample so as to be representative of the overall population of the nation. If the repliers are only the senior citizens, how could it express others’ mind?

In addition, the author’s recommendation seemly rests on the irrelevant assumption that it is the low-fat products abounding in many food stores makes Old Dairy’s high-fat foods lose the market and the company may face decline. He neither shows the information about sales of low-fat foods in stores nor the instance of depressive sales of Old Dairy’s high-fat foods. Furthermore, one company’s profits depend upon not only the quality of the goods but also the other aspects like sale advertising, business strategy, management and so on. The author obviously neglected these factors.

Even if the foods of high fat and cholesterol would have become unpopular, it is too earlier to conclude that Old Dairy's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubt decrease. The company might have begun to research the low-fat foods to satisfy consumer’s requirements. They may have adjusted their business strategy according to the reflection of market. Even the managers of the firm response dully to market feedback, it will buy time for the company transition, lying on the accumulation of past brand force and the market share. If so, Old Dairy is still worth to invest in.

To sum up, the argument is unpersuasive as it stands. It is inequitable to make the conclusion just basing on a superficial investigation about the foods market and Old Dairy Industries. To prove the fact that Old Dairy Industries’ shares are not lucrative investment, the author have to show more evidence that the company have no ability to develop new products and it has loosen its all previous predominance and the present market has been impacted strongly by low-fat products. And investors should be prudent before decide if to sell their shares or purchase stock in the company.
