In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

Television，as well as other media methods, bring us a new form of seeing the world and change our life greatly. The speaker claims that reading books is not as important as it once was because people can learn knowledge through watching television as well. It is true that people could gain a lot from television and video, but reading books is equally important which could not be replaced.

Admittedly, watching television imparts a lot of knowledge to humankind. Through realistic images and sound people could know every corner of the world in stead of going to there themselves and receive diverse news from everywhere just staying at home. The most persuasive example is the Discovery Channel, through which people could understand the various areas of knowledge such as technology, biology, geography, history and so on. What's more, there are also some professional teaching courses showing on the television. For example, many Chinese people learn English language on education channel, and many housewives get some life tips from life channel. It is so accurate and vivid images and sound providing by television and video that easily promote people to realize the world.  

However, the speaker overlooks some negative respects about watching television and video. Watching television provides so convenient and vivid form that it makes people especially some children think that they are in the world of television showing. Therefore they could not distinguish which is true and it is harmful to themselves and others. For example, some children lose their lives just because they imitate the action showing on the television. And some people become timid because they watch too much horror movies. On other hand, television program just injects all things as images and sounds into people's mind as a result they become lazy to thinking and receptive everything without them own judgments.

Moreover, books have many merits that could not be replaced by other records like television and video. Reading books could provide more spaces to image that give inspiration to many people. For example, novels now are still popular in the world for the reason that many people could imagine the scenes themselves instead of the pictures and the actors showing on the television. On the other hand, it is the good way that reading written words could save us time. People could skim the abstract at first and then peruse the information useful to them without seeing the entire program or spending much time on waiting the interested information performing on the television. Through this way more information could be gained and more time could be saved in the era of information explosion. In a word, reading books as well as other written forms is a very important way to learning till now.

To sum up, the invention of television provides human being a new way to understand the world as same as books. Without television and video, people could not see other places and things clearly and directly. But books are also an important way to mankind for its merits. Therefore, people should utilize the merits of both two methods to improve study efficiency.
