Issue177:
The study of an academic discipline alters the way we perceive the world. After studying the discipline, we see the same world as before, but with different eyes.
【翻译】对于一门学科的研究会改变我们对世界的看法。在学习这门学科之后,我们看到的世界一如既往,但是我们本身的角度和眼光已然不同。
Does the study of kinds of academic fields change the way we perceive the world? In my opinion, it definitely is(does). Through the understanding of academic disciplines, we have indeed seen an(a) different world, for that disciplines’ learning teach(teaches) us to see the things in different angles despite the things are the same.
Firstly, scientific theory studies and technological researches let us understand essences, principles and mechanisms of the natural world, then eliminate some misunderstanding of superficial phenomena by our naked-eye observation.(TS很好!) Consider, for example, in astronomy realm, the heliocentric cosmology, proposed by the famous astronomer-- Copernicus, informs us the earth and other planet revolve around the sun. And without this theory, ordinary populace tends to think that the earth is the centre of the universe from limited and skin-deep observations. Also with the study in physics realm, people would see the world with different eyes. Look the Galileo's experiment as an instance. People are used to conclude through their initial intuition that the heavier an object, the faster it drops down. But Galileo's experiment testifies that the speed of objects dropping down has no relation with weight. In other words, regardless of(学习一下!) these scientific disciplines, we cannot see the world in a different way, or in deeper insights.
Whereas social science, such as philosophy, sociology, psychology and the like, tend to teach us ways to analyze issues in the world, understand the value and ideas in the community, or realize the inner world of human beings. All those mentioned aspects cannot be perceived if we ignored academic disciplines in social science. The well-known dialectics in the philosophy teaches us that one coin has two sides. Thus, after realizing this method, we learn to analyze an issue from two aspects, beneficial and non-beneficial. It is obvious that without studying this method, most people tend to notice merely one aspect of an event. Sociology is a discipline to logic and synthesis the look, act and interest of people in communities. The study of sociology let us see the innovative thinking--values and ideas in individuals and communities. And through the research of psychology, we start to (pay)attention (to) the inner world of human beings, then we have a better understanding of ourselves and others.
After expertise in study, we tend to make use of our expertise to look at the problem in the world. For example, as to an ordinary skyscraper, people with different academic background will see the skyscraper in different aspects. For economists, they tend to consider in economic effects, such as the profit--the pay and the reward. For environment scientists, they tend to think whether this skyscraper has good protective measures to maintain beneficial environment. And architects will assess the skyscraper from its inner structure. Another example is about clone. Clone, which from the aspect of ecology, it is a sophisticate and advance technology, is considered breach the ethical and moral bottom line of human beings in sociologists and psychologists.
In sum, various academic disciplines provide various perceptions to human beings, and different disciplines tend to inform us different viewpoints. In this aspect, after study and understand an academic discipline, we see a different world through academic angles.
