I essentially agree with the speaker that significant advance in knowledge needs knowledge and experience from other various fields. There is no doubt that different disciplines are interrelated and that the knowledge of one field can shed light on the studies of other fields and many examples illustrate this assertion. However, this base on (this claim should carry with it a precondition that)the experts in the field of the study has already had the relevant fundamental theories.
Take the subject of mechanical engineering (ME) for example, which is my major(插入语放在for example 之前), and in which I profoundly understand the above point and the significance of correlation among every subjects. As one of(去掉of) professor at my university once said (and I paraphrase): "During the past several centuries, our disciplines (ME) have great advance. However, if we continue immersing ourselves in this narrow subject, overlooking the correlation with other disciplines, especially with the subject of electronic engineering (EE) and computer science (CS), little advancement we would obtain." The example of computerized numerical (CNC) control machine tools illustrates this point aptly. It requires knowledge not only about mechanism but also computer science and electronic engineering. The CNC system makes the machine automatic and enhances the accuracy; admittedly it ultimately will completely replace the traditional machine tools. Also, in other engineering realms, like astronomy, bionics and so on, the interaction of various field plays a very important role in their own respective advancement.
Another ordinary (familiar yet compelling) example of how expertise from other fields is required to advance knowledge involves the field of economics. Knowledge of mathematics was introduced into this field, contributing to the research. Undoubtedly, economic research requires various data, however, these data are always enormous, and what is important and difficult for economist is how to deal with these innumerous data to get useful statistic (it is important but difficult for economists to deal with these numerous data and to get useful statistic). Accordingly, statistics and mathematical analysis introduced into economics. For example, in the stock market, we are accustomed to judge the trend from the NASDAQ and Dow Jones Indexes, and they are of course calculated from (and of course they are efficient tools to tackle)enormous data about the number and price of each stock. Without supporting advances in calculus, the field of economics would never have seen the booming growth of its last 20 years. Mathematics helped convert economics from a qualitative, speculative field to a quantitative, definitive one. (很好的例子,很有说服力!)
Nevertheless, it is radical that the experts in one field firstly should have fundamental basic knowledge if any wants to make progress in his/her field (to make progress in a certain field, one must have fundamental basic knowledge in that very field). The most famous painting "impressionism sunrise" immediately comes to my mind. It involved the knowledge of the basic stenography in physics and investigation in neurology. But without the necessary fundamental skill of Monet, there is no way to see such masterpiece at all and there is no challenge to the traditional painting skills. Thus if one area need progress, the experts first have the key knowledge (Thus, progress in one area requires experts with the key knowledge). Only with the full-scale knowledge of the field can the research (researcher) keep a clear mind where is still deficient and what is the object. With such kind of information, he/she can find the very help of other fields to make progress. Take the instance mentioned above, only when the engineering experts know he wants to decrease the vibration, can he/she restore to other kind of knowledge.
To sum up, I agree with the speaker that one field of study can advance (the advancements in one field of study) significantly depend on some other field of study to an extensive extent, because of today's academic specialization. However, this base on the experts in the field of the study has already had the relevant fundamental theories.
注:文章扣题紧密,其中那则关于经济学与数学的例子很有说服力,但是倒数第二段的论证有些混乱,某些语句值得推敲。 |
