The speaker asserts that the study of history pays too much attention on individuals, and
it is the groups of people that made the most significant events and trends possible rather the famous few. Although I concede the influences of groups of people on the significant
events and trends in history, I tend to disagree with both respects of the assertion.

Admittedly, I can hardly imagine what the world would be without the messes’ taking
part in the process of social development. Comprehensive participating of groups of people is crucial to the success of any revolution during historical developments. Consider, for
instance, the War of Resistance against Japan, which is one of the most important battles in China during 20th century. The war created a myriad of unknown heroes and heroines.

Nevertheless, history informs us that it is the famous few who are impetus of significant
historical events. Take for example, the decision about America attending the Second
World War, which is decided by Roosevelt，and it is the decision that play a critical role in taking the War to end. Just think about what the world were going without the decision,
even if there were millions of the Allies’ troops had involving in the battle. This is one
case of historical patterns in which it is individuals who have been responsible for
significant events.

Profound scientific inventions and discoveries of the past were nearly all owning to certain key individuals. Consider the electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday,
which lead to the foundation of Electromagnetic Theory. It is the Electromagnetic Theory
that makes the possible the Electrical Revolution, which was the most significant event in 19th century for the world and contributed to momentous changes of people’s everyday
life. Another example is Maxwell’s physical and mathematical explanation of
electromagnetism—Maxwell Equation, which is the basis of the telecommunication.

Turn to the second statement about studying history. Since key individuals are always
integrated with era flavor and quality of their period, they can be milestones in the
process of historical developments. Any historian will agree that we can be clearer in
understanding roots of key historical events through studying famous few. For instance,
deep study in Confucius can make us easier to understand the Confucianism and
comprehend the foundation stone of Chinese Feudal Traditions. Another example is that
we can learn American social conditions and significant events in the middle of 19th
century through studying Abraham Lincoln, due to almost all of the crucial events in that
period were associated with him. In addition, we are able to be familiar with critic battles between old feudal force and the bourgeoisie in France or even in Europe through considering Napoleon Bonaparte. While investigating groups of people cannot have these functions above. If we assume that the history is composed of numerous zigzag lines, the famous
few is always standing on the point of intersection, through which we can be more clearly aware of trends of history and roots of significant events.

In general, the human society can be regarded as a ship in historical river. The masses are just like sailors, and the famous few like the captain. It is both sailors and the caption
who make the ship going. The ship is unable to travel without sailors, nevertheless, it is
even worse without a captain due to ship’s running in a false direction or just circling.
Accordingly, the captain is more important in traveling, and this is reason why captains’
names are kept in historical memory.
