"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

1,部分同意,应该分学科
2,学科分为两类,一类为应用学科,另一类为理论学科。应用学科的教学目的是培养学生应用知识的能力,知道所学的知识如何应用到现实生活中;理论学科是培养学生对未知领域探索的能力,
3,对于应用学科,可以,老师区外面工作,可以更清楚地这个领域的应用前沿,可以教给学生如何更好将所学知识与当前应用相联系,尽量缩短传授的知识与实际应用之间的差距,更有助于学生理解所学的知识,激发他们学习的兴趣。
4,对于理论学科,不必要。更多的需要观察,需要试验,而且理论学科的研究内容很难在当前的实际生活中找到应用领域,比如天文学、理论物理、地球动力学、历史。对于这些学科的学习,是为了更好的探索知识、领悟(explore unknown, profoundness, beauty, )



Do faculty ought to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the coursed they teach? Can this improve the quality of the faculty’s instruction at the college and university? I tend to agree that some faculty’s working outside the academic in professions related to their courses conduce to improving the quality of instruction at the college and university, however, it seems to go too far as that all faculty’s should be required to spend time working outside. The assertion ignores the distinct essence of different disciplines, and does not take the different purpose of courses into account.

Whether the quality of instruction at the college and university level can be improved through the faculty’s working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach depends on which kinds of courses the faculty teach. Generally speaking, disciplines can be divided into two categories, one is applied areas of which the main purpose is to utilize the knowledge into the practical society, and the other is academic areas of which the main purpose is to pursue the essence of the knowledge.

Considering the education in applied areas, where emphasizes cultivating not only the knowledge student learned but also student’s ability of utilization of knowledge, such as engineering, business, mechanics, law and so on, faculty may improve the quality of their instruction through spending time attending professions outside the academic world but related to their courses. The professions relevant to their courses make faculty acquaint to the contemporary utilization of what they teach, to the gaps between principles and practicality. The experiences the faculty attained and the problems they faced during their outside professions could help them make their instruction more interesting and provoking, as well as make their students more aware of relationship between theoretic knowledge and practical application and how to bridge form knowledge to practicality. In addition, the experiences from outside academic world can make faculty be more familiar with the demands from the society for their discipline, and they provide their students with these information to help discern the perspective and trends of disciplines they learned and find their interested careers. Experiences from outside professions can help the faculty of practical disciplines improve the quality of their instructions at colleges and universities.

Turning to the education in academic areas, where stress cultivating students’ ability of exploring unknown, profoundness and beauty, including art, astronomy, philosophy, theoretic physics, earth-dynamics, history etc., the faculty’s experiences from working outside academic world can hardly improve the quality of their instructions. Firstly, there are few professions related to those theoretic areas. Except for universities and some research institutes, an organization seldom needs an astronomer knowing well about the Black Hole or a philosopher researching philosophy in Ancient Greek. In addition, the quality of the faculty’s instructions in these areas depends on their profound awareness of these disciplines, which just resulting from a long time independent thinking, analyzing, synthesis and discussing with their colleague, and vividly transmitting the essence of these disciplines to their students, which coming from the skilled teaching technology and fully communicating with their students. Experiences from professions outside academic world can hardly contribute to either of the two aspects related to the quality of instructions in these theoretic areas.

To sum up, whether attending in outside academic world professions can improve the faculty’s quality of instructions depends on the different areas, including applied areas and theoretic areas, they belong to. In applied areas, experiences from professions can help faculty improve their instructions aiming at training students well dealing with practical problems. Nevertheless, in theoretic areas, experiences form professions can do little favor to their instructions aiming at cultivating students exploring the essence of knowledge.

小结:
1.从句部分的语法好像错误比较多,比如文中的In addition, the quality of the faculty’s instructions in these areas depends on their profound awareness of these disciplines, which just resulting from a long time independent thinking, analyzing, synthesis and discussing with their colleague, and vividly transmitting the essence of these disciplines to their students, which coming from the skilled teaching technology and fully communicating with their students. 两句。which后面不应该是动名词的形式,需要注意。其它部分的语法和用词都很不错。
2.思路很好,分类很明确值得学习
3.结尾可以再拔高一下
