The author suggests that we should eliminate speed limits in order to increase the states’ prosperity. To bolster his suggestion, the author reasons that high speed means more efficient and it will attract more motorists to increase the roll revenues. The author also gives an example to prove that it is safe. Nevertheless, these evidences undermine what they prove.
Firstly, high speed doesn’t mean more efficient travel. Common sense tells us that high speed might cause accident which will probably lead to traffic jam, affecting the efficiency. If so, we cannot sure commercial deliveries will be faster. Even it is true that commercial deliveries become faster, the author provides nothing about the travel fee and we cannot figure out the profits simply.
Secondly, the author fails to convince us that elimination of speed limits will attract more motorists and increase their state’s toll revenue. The author assumes that every motorist prefers high speed while in most cases it depends. People caring their security will probably find other ways to avoid danger since the high speed increases the potential danger. Sometimes people would rather transport by train than transport in high way because trains can help them save more and assure the safety. When it comes to emergency, traveling by air is probably a better way to solve the problems. Without specific situation, the author cannot convince us more motorists will be attracted. Besides, that more motorists use the highway will reduce the longevity of the high way and government has to repair the highway more often, which costs much money and decrease the toll revenues as well.
Thirdly, the example used to prove the safety on highway would be not affected suffers several questions. First, the example happened in the western state. The author’s state is likely not the same as the western ones such as weather conditions, populations and quality of motorists. Perhaps motorists in western states have higher quality so they pay more attention to the security and obey the rule to play an important role on reduce of accidents. Second, the elimination of speed limit just happens in daytime while excludes night time when most of accidents occur. Third, maybe there are many accidents happen and people are afraid of taking responsibilities that they hide the true.
In conclusion, the author’s suggestion cannot convince us to put it into practice. To bolster his/her suggestion, the author should provide more information to sure that high speed means more efficient and would attract more motorists to use the highway and increase the toll revenues as well. The author should also points out that their state has the same situation as the western one do to prove the safety of the policy.
