题目：ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

提纲：
1.       艺术家的确带给社会具有持久价值的东西；
2.       但是，评论家帮助人们更好的理解艺术家的作品；
3.       有时，是评论家使得艺术家的作品进入“great”的行列。

The issue that who actually gives society something of lasting value is always fiercely debated. Some persons, such as the author, think that should be the artist, while the other think it is the critic, a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc, who gives society something of lasting value. In my opinion, the artist provides the society something of last value; however, the critic is also helpful to maintain the lasting value of the society.

While creating great works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc, the artists give society something of lasting value at the same time. An artist's inspiration and their great works reveal the value and history of the society, and thus are full of lasting value. By studying the great works of the artist of that time, descendants can find out the way their ancestor acted, the value their ancestor valued, the background or aftermath of an important event, and so forth. Without these artists and their great works, possibly, many essential values and wisdom would be lost in the history. In a word, these artist help the society maintain the things of lasting value.  

However, it is the critics who help us to make better appreciation of the artists' great works through their deep views and proper critique. Undoubtedly, some great works of these artists' are always difficult to understand for ordinary people. For example, it is entirely possible that one thinks a profound painting of Van Gogh is useless. Therefore, without the critic, what the artist want to tell through their works is intricate and vague, and is therefore beyond the reach of common people. The critic gives people an accessible angle to understand the works by academically study work.

Further more, only a work which passes the test of critics can be great at some time. There many artists in the history, but only a few of them can be entitled "great". No matter what the artists think about their works, the works should be tested by the critics. To some extent, it is the critique from the critics help the society decide which work is really great. Only those of true value can win the critics and audience, thus can endure the test of time.

To summarize, by reflecting the value and history of human being, the artists who create great works in forms of novels, films, music, paintings, etc, do provide the society something of last value; however, the important role of critics should not be neglected because critic is also helpful to help people verify and understand the works of artist, giving society something of last value at the same time.
