In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by television as they can by reading books.

Books, as an important instructive medium for several centuries, are becoming out-dated because of its low effectivity. A new method of learning, television, is taking the place of books step by step with the development of human beings.
Television, as a great invention of last century, influences all respects of our lives, even learning. It provides better educator and more effective method. For example, we can attend a class on television, which is informed by excellent teacher, and also can be instructed by famous professor about his newest researcher attainment. This makes us easy to get better education and flesh insight, which will serve to benefit us more than get a boring theory in book which is taught by an average teacher. Moreover, television also conveys more information than books and this inspires learner's interesting. While on the book only poor word can be found, we can get both image and sound on television. Thus learner can take bald learning as a tourism of real world and he will like it.   
To certain extent, television has been a necessary method of learning. Since nearly a century ago when television begin to provide a new way to get knowledge, people has become more and more dependent on it. Without television, a teacher can not describe dynamic images but to cost a lot of time to write on blackboard which may result in students' repulsion. After the revolution of teaching diversification, everybody depends on television seriously and can not get accustomed with the world without television.
At the same time, we should not ignore reading books to get knowledge. Sometimes, television can not substitute books. Typical example is something abstract such as spirit. Only book can make its reader feel the spirit of the author, and hardly can a movie-maker express on his film on television. So, television is also a method of learning, but mainstream.
Anyway, in certain respect although books is still necessary to conveys information in our society currently, but I think television has been playing the primarily function
