Test 1 Task
University should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sexism in school has long established itself a prominent issue in society and therefore, some people advocate that universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. However, I oppose this absolute measure for reasons as follows.
For one thing, male and female students vary in their interests, specialties and qualities as well. First, in regard to the inborn physical elements, girls possess high capability of speaking, affective thinking and delicate perceptibility; as a result, girls excel in language and art fields. On the contrary, boys are in command of logical thinking and analytical ability which lead to their excellence in science research and technology study. What’s more, some so-called “dangerous “ majors related to heavy industry, such as mechanics and chemical engineering might have been boys’ better choice rather than girls’ in that it can do harm to female to a deep extent. Failing to take those factors into account, this measure is obviously unreasonable,
For another, the confinement to the number of male and female students, in fact, disobeys the equity rule to all the applicants. In order to carry out the measure, executors may cancel the admittance of some promising students only because they do not meet the gender condition. This sort of keeping balance measure, in stead, give rise to unequal situation among the students, and is unfavorable for the long-term development of universities, especially those comprehensive universities, to let the spirit of universities---freedom and diversity alone.
Drawn from I’ve discussed above, I come to the conclusion that it is unnecessary to limit the numbers of male and female students in every subject.
Test 2 Task 1
It has been inferred that students of different ages study for two main reasons--- for career or for interest. The first chart makes a comparison between the reasons in 5 categories, namely, under 26 year olds, 26-29 year olds, 30-39 year olds, 40-49 year olds, above 49 year olds. From the chart, we can clearly see that people under 26 study chiefly for interest, arriving at the peak. As age rises, the percentage steadily declines. It accounts for only 40% for 40-49 year olds and less than 20% for over 49 year olds.
The bar chart also shows the statistics about the students for self-interest. Comparatively, more and more people study for interest as age rises. It climbs from the lowest point 10% to 40% for 40-49 year olds, the same as for career, and finally reaches 70% for over 49.
The second reveals employer support toward employee’s study including time off and help with fees. According to it, at first, support decreases gradually from its highest level over 60% to the minimum 30%. However, it slightly increases afterwards and approaches 40% for over 49 year olds.
Test 2 Task 2
In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.
Nowadays, young people in some countries are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. This has come into public’s spotlight and triggered series of disputes on it. Views on the issue in question vary from person to person.
Quite a few people are of the opinion that a year’s work or travel will benefit young people from several facets which inside class cannot do. First, it tells the people what life is. School life has long barred them from a close watch on outside world. Only when these young men are exposed to real life can they understand the essence of life, which, might be a thousand miles away from what depicts on the books. Furthermore, a year’s working or traveling broadens their minds as well as trains their figures. Outside life mould a group of tough and mature men, who demonstrate better-prepared wisdom and courage to pursue their life in universities, where these qualities are in high demand.
From another standpoint, an increasing number of people strongly believe that a year for working of traveling is a waste of time and might result in some rash incidents. They insist that young people are impetuous and they haven’t experienced enough to face complicated society. When they suddenly shake off their parents’ control and teachers’ supervise, they are possible to indulge themselves in a vicious way and what’s worse, to be ill-guided by negative side of life, such as drugs and alcohol. In this regard, the suggestion above is far from a sound one.
It is quite natural that the suggestion of working or traveling has both advantages and disadvantages. However, personally, I hold the view that its advantages overweigh the dark side. Young people will still encounter those downsides after university graduation, and they necessarily need a chance to experience life in advance, which is an aid to their grow-up. Accordingly, I advocate that young people make a year’s preparation like this before entering universities.
Test 3 Task 2
Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Education concerning children has long been the public’s focus. Some people insist in injecting a sense of competition into children while others maintain that, to become a better an adult, a child need to learn how to co-operate. Before giving my own opinion, I think it is important to look at arguments on both sides.
Due to the rapid progress of modern society, a fierce market emerged, arousing keen competition. Confronted with the severe situation, a man with a sense of competition can stand up and swim against all the challenges, finally becoming a successful individual. In that case, children with a competitive will perceive their insufficiency or other peers’ excellence, try to learn from others while promoting their overall abilities, and therefore, occupy the superiority over others. Hence, some people extract the essence from social Darwinism “survival of the fittest”, concluding that children had better to be provided with this kind of sense.
Still, some believe that children who are encouraged to co-operate rather than to compete are more promising in the future. Their supporting evidence was expressed as follows. First, team work is more appreciated both in schools and companies. Co-operation fully explores everybody’s potential, combines different people’s wisdom and can receive further advancement in course tasks or social work. In addition, a child who knows to co-operate handles both public and personal relations smoothly, and as a result, wins supports from classmates or colleagues. These two factors are more possibly to establish a better man.
In my opinion, children who manifest both competitive will and co-operation sense approach success nearer. The sense of competition stimulates them never to cease their fight and catch up with the first rates. At the same time, they share an even bigger victory through co-operation. I’m fully convinced that children should be led to a co-existent development--- to foster the competition and co-operation ability.
Test 3 Task 2重写
Recently, over the past few years, parents have consumed more efforts in nurturing kids. As to childhood education, some insist that children had better possess a sense of competition, whereas, others maintain, to be a better adult, children should learn how to co-operate. From my point of view, I appreciate the latter view, that is, children need “co-operation education”.
Co-operation plays a key role in children’s development, and furthermore, beneficial to their career life. First, co-operation explores every kid’s potential. Children work together bring out various ideas, no matter how absurd or queer they might sound, and exhibit originality. They put their ideas into trial or even practice, which is of important help to their intelligence development. In addition, a child who co-operates can simply form a nice personality and thus wins supports and respects from his peers. Firmly as I believe, co-operation lays a good foundation for the kids’ public relations.
Yet, some people are afraid that co-operation couldn’t stimulate children to strive for their future as competition does. From this respect, I think, children with a sense of co-operation don’t lose their heart for fight, but have a better understanding towards competition. Due to the different opinions stemming from co-operation, children need to research, discuss, and even debate. They realize their own insufficiency and learn from others’ excellence while comparing each other’s work. As a result, I’m fully convinced that children who command how to co-operate are competitive as well.
Concluded from what I discussed about, a “co-operation education” outweighs teaching competition in several ways. On the whole, to foster a more promising child, parents should encourage them to co-operate.
