Issue 38
"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
Is reading books not as important as it once was, as the author alleges? The author claim so, for the reason that he or she believe people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. In a sense, I tend to concede that television enter people’ daily lives with the development of technology. However, I do not completely side with this statement because the author claims the view by overlooking the crucial rule of another issue and unfairly give them a second priority. In my point of view, reading book is still irreplaceable and merits further advocation.(觉得怎么开头有点像argument。个人觉得issue题目是一个流派的观点,而不是某个author)
To begin with, television gives us an option to traditional education through reading. Indeed the vivid images it produces succeed in the education of children, who are much more inclined to accept visual information than abstract letters or characters. Television raises our consciousness by providing the latest news and discoveries, extending our horizon by such documentary programs such as “National Geographic” and“Discovery”, whose contents might otherwise be unapproachable in an entire lifetime.
Secondly, even though television can provide us more information and opportunity to learn useful knowledge, we need to see the disadvantage of it(有点chinglish,换个表达或许好些). Television stations operate as profit enterprises. Consequently, television programs are profit-based, and their commercial orientation drives them to be entertaining more so than educational, for the latter are typically less profitable. The accompanying result is that TV programs are liable to increase commercial advertisements for productions. Yet, these productions maybe bring disadvantage affection to people. To illustrate this point clearly, we can see the example as fellow. Mitsubishi Motors had concealed significant defects in the break system of Pajero, one of the company’s major products, before apologized to public. Many consumers believe their advertisements through television and buy their production. Hundred of car accidents were directly caused by the break error. And then, the company suffered a great goods return, losing not only the market share but also the confidence of consumers. Thus, television stations should not accept the advertisements blindly.(个人觉得这个例子不是很好,它不能很好的展现书与电视相比下电视的一些弊端,反而更像指责广告的误导性)
On the other hand(这个短语好象必须和on the one hand一起搭吧~~), watching television also affects teenagers. Television programs and movies that depict violence among teenagers are extremely popular. Given how influential these media are, we have good reason to believe that these depictions cause young people to engage in violent behavior. Hence, depictions of violence among teenagers should be prohibited from television programs, if only those programs promoted to young audiences. Contrarily, reading book is still irreplaceable and merits further advocation even it is a traditional form of studying. We should know many outstanding literatures is needing us to read carefully. So many people chose to buy a book and read it. Meanwhile, watching television too long is bad for you eyes.
To sum up, there is no fixed standard to judge the fundamentality of watching television and reading book. I fundamentally disagree with the conclusion that reading books is not as important as it once was. In fact, they all contribute directly to the development of society and the advancement of human being.
评价:
