Who made the significant events and trends possible in history, the famous few emphasized by history study, or the groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten? To seek a proper answer to this question, we should make a reflection in retrospect of history itself, and get illumination. After that, it might be easy for us to understand that historians are right, it is the famous few that contribute more to the process of human history.

Admittedly, significant historical events and trends would not seems so significant if there had not been the efforts of groups of people who fought for these trends or events, or devoted themselves to these, or both. A typical example in this point is the Great Wall, which have been regarded as one of the seven great wonders of the world as well as a milestone in the history of Chinese architecture. Like any other conspicuous architectural works, the Great Wall would not have been but for the wisdom and strength of numerous hardworking labors in ancient China. This case might throw some light on the point that groups of people whose names have long been forgotten indeed made undeniable contribution to history.

However, we could not lose sight to the indispensable functions of famous few to make these important events and trends taken place, and some of them also got achievement by their own effort with little, if any, help of other people. During the Renaissance in Europe, a large number of painters and writers participated in this revolutionary trends, their activities helped greatly to form a harmony and agreeable atmosphere for artistical creativity. Nevertheless, it was the famous few, like Da Vinci, who laid the spiritual fundament and leaded the trends, and their masterpieces, such as the Last Supper, be viewed as represent the highest accomplishment of the creative style of Renaissance. When it comes to physics, it is the same. The work of a great number of people who focus in this discipline contributed to its development, and breakthroughs, like Newton's law of gravity and Einstein's special and general theory of relativity often brought by the famous few. These cases tells us that the famous few should be remembered by history, because they deserve it, due to their outstanding achievement.

Although both the famous few and groups of forgotten people were essential to historical events and trends, this does not mean that they are of the same importance. To some degree, the role plared by the famous few was more significant than that of groups of ordinary people, for the reason that they were prominent leaders in various areas of society, no matter politics or economy, science or art. This leaders possessed the power and wisdom to govern or lead the idea or action of others. Actually, history inevitably indicates that a group of people could achieve little without the guide of a the famous few.  Even the Great Wall was not built by ancient labors automatically, but under the force of the governor of the time. It was realized by the working of labors, however, it embodies the will of the governor, not the groups of people who built it. This case could be used to point out that the role of the leaders is overwhelmingly significant. Lacking of the direction of leaders, the abilities of groups of people could not be concentrated and then work together orderly to make something wonderful possible. The famous few were such great leaders of their society.

For all this reason, one does not have to go very far to see that the most significant events and trends in history is mainly own to the famous few, though groups of people also played a indispensable part in these trends and events. It seems that their achievement was quite dependent with the famous few. From the perspective of history study, it is not a mistake to place emphasis on prominent individuals. Because it is likely that to emphasize groups of people, instead of the famous few, means emphasize all the people, if so, history study might be but at the risk of emphasizing no one.
