TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
WORDS: 612 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-3-2 21:02:52
How to make a choice before the new financial situation that QDII has been set up? Should it be allowed to carry out euthanasia? Since New Jerusalem is seen as the city of God in both Judaism and Moslemism, how can the domain conflict between Israel and Palestine be solved? Qusetions in the new and complex world today are so difficult to answer according histories that some people think it is useless to turn to them. However, I strongly disagree with that opinion. No matter how the world develops, histories always play a significant role.
To begin with, histories supply us experiences and lessons, which will guide us to live today with less flections. To illustrate, I would like to take the great depressions happened in US as examples. In the 1920s, the American economy was shocked by a series of large financial crisises. Through hasty and harsh efforts, it remained healthy after the year of 1930. However, after Americans turned their pages of calendars to the January 1, 1970, another nationwide financial crisis broke out. This time, the government didn't slap into panic again. In fact, after dating back to last depression and looking back those effective policies, officials are confident to decrease the bad effects of depression to the least extent. It followed that the depression was successfully eliminated. That typical instance tells us that histories can teach us how prehumen try to solve similar problems? If they succeeded, we can gain experiences; if they failed, lessons should also be seen as valuable wealths.
In addition, cases in the past will bring about hints and innovative ideas to us to make a living in the present. In the world of programming, the twice revolutions of programming languages are just cases in point. Nowdays, the most popular language are object-oriented languages, such as C++, Java and C#. Nevertheless, this kind of languages has been found many limitations in practice, such as that if the basic class library is modified, then the classes extending form it will fail to work. How to improve the difficulty has been put on discussion table. At this crucial moment, computer scientists try to seek help from histories. As I know, most engineering colleges has always taken C programming language as the first one for students to learn, which is a typical structured programming language. In 1990, structured programming languages encounted the a similar crisis with object-oriented languages does today. However, scientists decidedly gave up improving them endlessly and jumped out of the world of structured languages. Afterwards, they designed another form of lanuguages, which are just object-oriented languages. Recently, after areviewing this period of histories, language designers jumped out of the world of object-oriented languages again and succeeded in designing a more efficient and perfect language form - service-oriented languages and overcomming the diffculty of computer science.
Addmittedly, it requires innovations to solve new and complex problems today, since the function of histories also has its limitations. As mentioned above, for some newfangled phemomenones, such as making a choice before the new financial situation that QDII has been set up, treating with euthanasia objectively and solving domain conflict between Israel and Palestine. Facing those problems, just relying on histories cannot help us solve them effectively and swiftly. Therefore, innovative methods and independent considering should never be neglected.
In sum, judging from the reasons that histories can not only supply us experiences and lessons but also bring about hints and innovative ideas to us to make a living, we should value the functions of history, although it also has its own limitation. No matter how the situation of this world develops, histories always play a significant role.
