Whether a discipline of academia can advance significantly without the introduction of knowledge and experience outside this field, as the speaker maintains? I strongly agree with this claim. In spite of certain fundamental fields, such as mathematics, philosophy, most disciplines require the help of the outsiders.

Admittedly, when it comes to certain disciplines which are fundamental, the interaction between knowledge and experience of insider and that of outsider is not so necessary. For instance, the mathematics owes its significant advancement to the exact logical reasoning from a series of axioms and assumptions upon which it is based. That’s to say, the maths revises and perfects itself without the other fields’ intervention.  A revolutionary new philosophy system which brings about great development of the philosophy can be attributable to the ideologist’s profound exploration in his mind of the laws that the natural word, human society, as well as the human being follow. And the advancement of philosophy depends on the philosopher’s personal insight.

Nevertheless, as to those disciplines which are derivate from the fundamental ones, for example, engineering, medicine, the significant progresses are made possible by other fields’ specialists who can bring their majors’ knowledge and experience in. With the help of expertise from diverse realm, we can view the work at hand in a different perspective, and acquire inspiration to sweep the obstacle, thereby achieving significant promotion of our realm, or even resulting in the birth of a new discipline. For example, CAD(Computer Aided Design), which profoundly improves the manner that the engineers design and analyze, is the result of the introduction of software into industry.  Moreover, the support advancing from other field also benefits our realm in preventing the predominant ideas’ influence.

Furthermore, the speaker’s statement would have more merit in this new century. With the increasing ability to create their own destiny, the human race is so ambitious to achieve greater things that those objectives are impossible to be accomplished by experts merely from one realm. For examples, the Apollo Program undertaken by NASA, through which human was launched to the moon first time, is a classic fulfilled by more 20,000 companies, and a multitude of scientific institutions and colleges from varied fields. And through this program, many engineering realms advanced significantly and therefore the U.S.A regained its leadership in the technology in the world.

In sum, except several fundamental disciplines which can revise and prefect themselves, most fields need the introduction of knowledge and experience of other realms to achieve significant advancement. And there is a tendency that the development of modern discipline increasingly depends on the knowledge of other realms.
