50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

The speaker asserts that all faculty should work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. I concede that in some academic fields working in related professions can improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. However, I disagree with the speaker's conclusion that all faculty should be required to work outside the academic world.

Admittedly, some subjects themselves have tight ties with practical professions outside the academic world. This is especially true when it comes to sociology. As is well known, the research object of sociology is human society. Without real world, sociology research will become unmeaning and useless. Similarly, technology fields should also keep close connection to related professions outside campus. For example, for improvement in computer architecture, professors in computer science have to acquaint themselves with the actual requirements on computing. Without such knowledge, their designs which do not meet the requirements in real world will never be implemented. In short, practice is one of the fundamental factors to develop these academic areas.

In addition, professors in the fields which tightly connect with the world outside academia will benefit from their practice experiences when they instruct students. Let us take business class as example. A professor with practice experiences always can bring the up-to-date business cases to his or her class. And these cases will make it easier for students to understand the concepts and theories in textbook since these new cases are abstractive and convictive.

Nevertheless, in some academic areas, practice in professions is unavailable or needless. For instance, theory mathematics is such a subject which has no direct relationship with any profession in outside world. Professors and students do not need any practice outside academic world to aid their academic research. Similarly, working inside academic world is enough for literature scholars. We could not associate any profession outside academia with a professor who works on Shakespeare’s drama.

To sum up, faculty in some academic fields can benefit from their work in professions relevant to their courses. However, there are some academic areas which have no need to practice outside academic world. We should follow this suggestion according to the attributions of subjects.

To sum up, faculty in some academic fields can benefit from their work in professions relevant to their courses. However, there are some academic areas which have no need to practice outside academic world. We should follow this suggestion according to the attributions of subjects.
