47"Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."

Does the society place enough emphasis on the intellect? The speaker does not think so. I concede that the society sometime pay more attention to political or entertainment than science and technology, which need reasoning and other cognitive skills. However, in my view, our society has already paid much attention to the intellect factors, and we should not forget the importance of non-intellect.

First of all, the important rules which intellect played in our education system represent the emphasis of our society on it. From the fundamental education to the high education, the tests of intellect-that is, the tests of reasoning and other cognitive skills-accounts for a great part of the whole exams of the student. For example, in the National Collage Entrance Examine of China, the examines of math, physics and chemistry , of which the scores often decided by the intellect factor , accounts major part of the total score, on which the colleges depend to check whether a student is outstanding and to decide whether to give the student admission.

Furthermore, there is rarely doubt about the great improvement that science and technology brings. Science and technology, which is the fruit of people's intellect skills, bring us cars and planes to make traffic easier; give us Penicillin to avoid suffering more from illness; offer us computers and phones to communicate more quickly. Hence, the scientists are given high society position and abundant creature condition to award and encourage them. In today's world, the focus of competition between countries is the peak of science and technology instead of population or land hundreds of years ago. Every country puts a great part of its finance income to support the development of science and technology.

However, the factor of intellect cannot solve all the society questions. Science and technology may help us to deal with the environment pollution, but can not eliminate the hate between nations. Actually, the developed countries are developing even faster with the assistance of advanced science and technology such as digital technology, which causes the gap between the rich and poor countries become larger and larger. And it is also science and technology that brings many new powerful weapons and causes many tragedies. Many problems of human society need not only the intellect but also non-intellect which includes love and forgiveness. The independence of India is attained not by Gandhi’s reasoning or logical skills but by his spirit of humanity and forgiveness.

In my opinion, the overemphasis on intellect factors do harm to our society. We should calls for the balanced emphasis on both intellect factors, like reasoning, and humanity. And our education system, which determines the future of society, should pay balanced attention to these two factors instead of only examining the intellect levels of students. Gandhi and King provide us precise example about how to improve the society with these non-intellect factors.

In sum, intellect do prodigious contribute to the improvement of human society but it is not the whole issue which we should consider. Besides intellect, there are also many non-intellect factors we should place emphasis on.

后半句好像没有什么联系啊,和前面topic?如果要是强调教育的重要性是不是该去掉non呢?

我觉得这里从句有点太多了,尝试下简单句?

说实话没有看出来这里(科技不是万能的)和中心(社会给予intellect的重视)有什么联系,觉得有点跑

不过要是将以上这两段的中心融合就没有问题了!
