WORDS: 569 TIME: 00:55:00 DATE: 2008-4-1 11:39:30
The speaker acknowledges that through viewing the government at work could make people know more about the issues that affect their lives, thus, come to the suggestion that it will bring more benefit to the society by introducing more kinds of government proceeding-trials, debates, meetings, etc on the television. I basically agree with what contention that televisions could bring much useful information, however, whether this specific benefit could bring the suggestion need further consideration.
We are now more likely to view various reports from the television than before, either with graph depiction in the news programs or the complementary analysis report in the specific program. The useful information providing by the television helps us to understanding better about how government working as well as more background about the issues that are closely related with our lives. It will in turn motivate people to participate in the community activities or national affairs with more passion. For example, the whole process of president selection in America, the most important affair to U.S. people, it spams every state of America and covers every potential elector. All the debates and assertion of the candidates about their views on each national problems and how they will improvement the situations are transferred through television. Thus, more information supplied in the television, more likely that people will choose the candidate that can best represent their benefits.
Another benefit that television could bring to us is the better supervision people could have on their government. Take the example of the famous 'Watergate Scandals', it was first discovered by a journalist and get national attention in the television report which eventually cause more deep influence to American politic realm.
However, we could not overstate the benefit that television could bring for us for the limited concerned following.
Firstly, every country has its secrets either in national guarding or the policy that will cause uncertain effects, it is necessary to keep the policy-making process in control until its effects are finally confirmed and evaluated, otherwise, it will harm the country by important information seized by other country with unpleasant effects and threatened the benefit of the society in the end.
Secondly, the television companies survived through making enough profits, thus, they have the impetus to attract more audiences through the broadcasting programs. It is really doubtful that the broadcasting company could take the benefit of the whole society as their priority guidelines in deciding which programs should be broadcasted in the television. Obviously, we could find many meaningless debates about the government in the television, which only repeat the useless assertion and come to no better solutions in tackling the problems. The more similar programs are televised, the more precious time it will take, and with limit production.
Otherwise, broadcasting company may be influenced by one specific politic party, and play as a tool to make the party more popular in the country. Thus, the televised government proceedings can not escape from the doubt of objective and accurate. Considering the significant affect in transferring information to people, we should be very careful about the suggestion that broadcasting more government proceedings in the television.
To sum up, the convenience and effectivity we benefit from the information supplied in television did improve our understanding about how government works to some extent. However, the limitation and possible bad effects could not be neglected either. Accordingly, on balance the speaker is fundamentally correct. |
