The author asserts that technology not only influences our social customs and ethics, but a key factor determining the direction in which they develop. The author's contention has some merit on the basis that as technologies prevail in the contemporary society, changes do occur in the customs and ethics. However, I can not accept the author's claim embracing that technology actually determines social customs and ethics.

It might be attempting to agree with the speaker's assertion that our social customs and ethics are affected by technology. Two evidences showing how technology influencing the development of them. One argument involves computers popular in everyday life nowadays. With more and more use of computers, the information are easily accessible, yet a series of problems raised, such as privacy and what kinds of information should be deleted which do not exist in previous times. It is well known that privacy is a fundamental right for citizens; however, nowadays more and more people realize that privacy can be undermined in some particular circumstances, giving priority to the healthy development of children by forbidding them approach of some pornography and unscrupulous pages. Take the American charges about MSN, googles for example. Also, the position of privacy pales in the front of citizen's security.

Another argument bolstering the author's assertion is about changes of people's minds and attitudes. Technology in industrial and economical makes the products produced faster and faster, leaving the tempo quicker and quicker. In today's worlds, people are more and more utilitarian, hallowing practicality as their idol, and all talents should serve for it. Also technology renders people much quicker to communicate with each other expressing different ideas and opinions through e-mails, internet and so on. This prompts the development of society and frees our minds. It is not a little exaggerated to say that technology plays a significant role in altering our recognition about several of matters, attitudes toward women for example.

While technology has important impact on the social customs and ethics, the author's assertion that technology actually determines them is unwarranted. Two compelling arguments against the author’s positions are displayed below. One argument is that social customs are handed down and formed through several generations; it is ridiculous to change it only through technology. So does ethics. Some fundamental ethics spring from human nature can not be influenced by every external environment, taking loving each other because we belongs to the same species for example. Similarly, social behaviors, the punctual of time, for example can not be change by technology.

Another argument against the author's contention is that actually it is social customs and ethics that determine the development of technology. Take the genetic research for example. At first, the conception of genes and inherit ion was produced by Mendal, an Augustinian scientist and priest through the pea experiments, and in today's world, people use the genetic programs for treating some diseases. However, colon of fetus is controversial and many believe that this project violates ethics and will inevitably result serious problems disadvantageous of human beings, therefore, this particular research was forbidden. Similarly, many foodstuffs with other's genes are viewed as noxious for people's health and thus these products are required to be noted informing people. All these examples indicate that in fact, social customs and ethics confine the development of technology.

In conclusion, the author begs question. I concede that technology brings about changes in all aspects of our lives, including social customs and ethics. However, the author's broad contention that technologies actually determine social customs and ethics is unwarranted, considering nature and formation of customs and ethics. Yet on the contrary, it is social customs and ethics determines the development of technologies.
