In recent years, there is an increasingly notable controversy concerning whether our education system including high schools, colleges as well as universities should spend more time on teaching general subjects or just focus on helpstudents to prepare for future career. Arguing for schools should stress career education are those people who hold the opinion that the pragmatic function of education is to help students improves job skills. As far as I am concerned, schools should concentrate on basic and general education, when considering the essence of education and significance of basic knowledge.
To begin with, it is undeniable that to prepare students for their career lives is one of most vital function of education. It seems ironical but actual that most people resort to education for practical purposes. For instance, in high schools, time supposed to be spent on art classes and physical education is occupied by various ‘useful’ courses like computer skills training. What’s more, a growing number of college students choose to major in technical fields to secure aprofitable job soon after graduation. Most of those who choose to further educationapply for MBA programs rather than other fundamental research programs to prospect decent and wealthy lives.
Nevertheless, people need to be taught basic knowledge and common senses, before they learn advanced technology or skills for their future career lives. To be specific, just suppose how a student can learn computer programming if he or she is lack of fundamental principle of computer such as how computer works and how to typeor use the mouse. Moreover, if a student is in shortage of basic mathematical knowledge, how can he or she understand the complexity of algorithms in order to improvement their performance? Therefore, before entering into career and becoming qualified employees, students should be nurtured with adequate basic knowledge.
Furthermore, education should be aimed at more significant objective, which is to improve quality of the whole nation. After all, the true purpose of education is learning for its own sake. People, fed with merely practical knowledge and jobs skills, will be just like robots mechanically working in factories and offices, deprived of motivation to acquire and accumulate general knowledge, let alone to inherit essence of human civilization such as literature, music, painting etc. Consequently, if our education system exists only for pragmatic function, public quality of ournation may suffer from degeneration.
To sum up, considerable though benefits that vocational education provides are, they cannot compete with pronounced necessity of general education, when both the true purpose of education and importance of general knowledge are taken into account. From my point of view, these are two most crucial criteria for decision makers of our education system to consider, and spending more time on general knowledge teaching can achieve quality improvement of both individuals and overall national.
