In some high schools and universities, the students have group works, giving the members of a group the same grade (credit), do you think it can evaluate the students?(2008.1.13)

In today’s education system, group working is endowed with more and more attention. Students are grouped in to separate teams work on one or some assigned tasks and finally given same credit as team mates. However, is this really works in promoting cooperating spirit? I can hardly agree.

The first problem lies in the fact that team work deprived students the chance of develop comprehensively. The spirit of team work is to specialize a task, divide it into small different parts and every member plays his or her small quarter; while for students, the real sense of learning is to acquire as much as skills they could. A good example is a botany group that my nephew was assigned to in his last semester. He did a good job in that team and finally got an A in the finally paper. During the summer vocation, I toke him to an arboretum and ask him to give me a hand in finishing an orchid growth observatory. However, he could hardly move a step forward in that practice. I thought he did a good job in school and this should be just a piece of cake for him, however, he told me when in school, he worked with classmates and his responsibility was just about group all the data other collected and handed over to another teammate for statistic analysis. How can a future biologist have no idea about how to observe the objects they are researching?

Moreover, working in groups may allow students to fall into bad habits of relying too much on others. If required only of finishing their own parts of tasks, few would move on to consider if there would be something else he or she could do. With time stretches on, students lost the ability of independent and became lazy. One will never manage to help others’ work even if his teammates meet problems or even if he could settle by himself. The reason is simple, he cannot be awarded by extra work.

Thence it comes to the utmost problem among this teamwork format--- unfairness of same grade to all group members. If the outcomes of hard workers and lazy stuffs are identical, the enthusiasm will be disappeared. Even worse is, arduous students, who probable care about the credit, work hard to make up the works should be done by the idle; while idle team members still enjoying the fruit of hard working ones. What will the result finally be? More often than not, industry students will manage to work on themselves and quit the team

In summarization, there are many obstacle during the course of cultivating team work spirit to students, and among all these, it is wholly unfair to evaluate all team members the same rather than judging their own contribution.

LZ的语音功底确实没话说,遣词造句都很值得学习。不过个人觉得这篇文章似乎好像把重点的部分没有详细写,而更侧重于说work in group的问题了。
