标 题: [FW]Doctoral positions available at ECE Carnegie Mellon Uni
Dear friends:
Our Electric Energy Systems Group (EESG) \http://www.eesg.ece.cmu.edu is a rapidly emerging place for carrying out truly multi-disciplinary research on future electric energy systems. We are taking a step back and working on fundamentals of the rapidly changing industry needs (problem posing, mathematical modeling, analysis, control, sensing, communications, economic policy). Primarily system theoretic approach to these problems is being taken, with the emphasis on identifying the inter-dependences between the industry structure, information architectures, industry objectives and signal processing, sensing, control and communications needed to design the incentives for aligning these. For those who work in this domain it should be clear that much novel work is to be done before truly arriving at frameworks for implementing digital support for transforming the electric power grids of today into enablers of unconventional energy sources and effective demand-side technologies.
If you are a student with interest in pursing PhD work in this area and have strong background in both electric power and systems control, please consider applying to the ECE Department at Carnegie Mellon University for admission as a PhD student. Please mention in your application the area of interest, EESG,and my name if you are interested in working with me. Please feel free to send me an e-mail as well before applying, and cc my assistant Ms. Claire Bauerle at cbauerle@ece.cmu.edu and mention the subject "Interest in PhD Work in EESG".
We look forward to hearing from you.

Research Interests:
Prof. Arce’s research interests lie on signal processing and its broad applications in imaging, communications, audio, and computer networks. In these applications, the information-carrying signals are, in general, non-deterministic and consequently statistical methods are at the core of the research.Dithering and noise describe physical random phenomena having a broad and significant impact on acquired signals. Dr. Arce’s research has focused onexploiting the statistical models of dithering and noise to build optimal signal processing systems. Blue- and Green –noise processes, for instance, haveproved to be fundamental in the development of optimal digital ink-jet and laser printing systems – a multibillion dollar industry. Similar concepts are also applicable in digital video and audio signal processing. Dithering itself constitutes information and thus it can be exploited in security andinformation hiding tasks. An emerging area of interest is the design of covert dither patterns that synthesize visual cryptographic shares for authentication applications. When the signal’s random phenomena is best characterized by non-Gaussian statistics, efficient processing methods are ingeneral non-linear. Prof. Arce’s group has pioneered the development of nonlinear signal processing tools mirroring that of Wiener and Widrow, extensively used in linear signal processing. Current Projects: Multi-tone blue noise dithering Compressive sensing and its applications Statistical approaches toInternet and wireless network congestion control Network and media security Signal processing for navigation and guidance

Multiple PhD and two PostDoc positions in Real-time Embedded Systems
at the University of Waterloo, Canada
The Embedded Systems Group at the University of Waterloo, Canada, has multiple PhD and two PostDoc openings in the area of embedded and distributed real-time systems. The long-term goal of the group is to investigate theoretical underpinnings, modeling, and analysis methods together with system abstractions, platforms, and tools for building complex embedded systems with timing constraints more easily. It seeks to integrate theoretic results with implementation strategies and demonstrate the effectiveness of its research by experimentation and prototypes.
The prospective candidates should be interested in systems research or theory research in this area and therefore have good knowledge of system design, system analysis, and basic computer science as well as solid programming skills and/or knowledge of computational theory.
Please contact Prof. Fischmeister at sfischme@uwaterloo.ca for further details (or see http://www.ece.uwaterloo.ca/~sfischme/students.html) and on how to apply.
General information about UWaterloo and the department:
The University of Waterloo has been ranked as the Canadian university with the best reputation 14 times over the last 16 years in McLean's national survey. It is located in the attractive two-university community in the Region of Waterloo (population of 450,000) in southwestern Ontario. The city of Toronto and Pearson International
Airport are within easy driving distance. The department currently has more than 75 faculty members and is in the process of expanding to more than 90 faculty members, making it one of the largest ECE departments in Canada and North America. More than 450 graduate students are enrolled in the programs of the department.
