A mistakenly cynical view of human behavior holds that people are primarily driven by selfish motives: the desire for wealth, for power, or for fame. Yet history gives us many examples of individuals who have sacrificed their own welfare for a cause or a principle that they regarded as more important than their own lives. Conscience – that powerful inner voice that us what is right and what is wrong -can be a more compelling force than money, power, or fame.

Assignment: Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame, or power? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

I agree without doubt, that conscience is of utmost importance. For things to happen, conscience is the basis and can never be compromised. Conscience should be the basic value of all man, where the lost of conscience will mean a lost in morals. Engraved deep in people’s heart, conscience acts as the fundamental motivator for all upright people.

+ z; A2 V4 @! a9 x; r6 c; K" DIn times of turmoil, great people motivated by their kind conscience to help those in need emerged. One example will be Mother Teresa’s unconditional love to the sick and needy. I believe that this wonderful god-sent savior is surely encouraged by a simple conscience, to render help to those suffering. True heroes only emerge during the darkest times, such as in World War II. The emergence of such heroes is fundamentally motivated by conscience, never money, fame or power. In midst of Nazi’s slaughter of Jews during the holocaust, there came Schindler, whose conscience bear not to see more innocent lost of lives, saved a great lot of Jews from oblivion with his sheer will power. He used the excuse of recruiting workers to his metal factory, while in real fact, he harbored several thousands of Jews. Once a successful businessman, he soon became bankrupt as he used up all his savings to maintain the haven of Jew refugees. An important fact to note that is, Schindler at that time, is a Nazi.

2 M# `+ ?6 J. G6 ~: C: kHowever, as there is always the other side of the coin, the dark side of man still thrives. A famous depiction of the dark sides of man would be Harvey Two-Face, the comic character in Bat Man. With literally two contrasting sides of face, one handsome while the other scarred by acid. Harvey Two Face base all his actions with the flip of a coin. In World War II, the blood-crazed and power crazy Nazi leader Hitler put the world in turmoil. There is also the fascist whose combined greed for fame and power dragged the dispute into a World War. Thus, the examples of all these people have also shown that the dark side of man is truly destructive.

: _& B+ P. u. G! UIn all, I would say that for upright people of clear conscience, they will surely base their actions without compromise of conscience. For the other side, a lost in conscience will mean a great lost in humanity.
